Collins brings plus size and ball skills to the safety position.
26 S Landon Collins (So.)
2012 season: Saw action in all 14 games, with most of that coming on special teams. Recorded 14 tackles and blocked a punt. Honored as a special teams player of the week following wins over Missouri, Western Carolina and Auburn. One of four Special Teams Award recipients for the 2012 season.
2013 spring practice: Worked with the second-team defense at safety. Posted four tackles in first scrimmage of spring drills. Saved his best for A-Day game, leading the White team in tackles with five stop while also breaking up two passes and intercepting another. Ozzie Newsome Most Improved Freshman Award recipient.
What he brings to the table: Future starter with the only question being when: 2013 or 2014? Until then, candidate for third safety duties in the dime package, either at safety or money. Superior athlete, as evidenced by the range he displayed in picking off a deep out from Alec Morris in the spring game. Returns as the Crimson Tide's top performer on coverage units in the kicking game.
27 S Nick Perry (Sr.)
2012 season: Part-time starter in the secondary, working at both safety and money (dime back). Played in all 14 games, making four starts. Finished the season with 38 tackles, including two for loss, a sack and a fumble recovery.
2013 spring practice: Turned the A-Day game into his own personal highlight film, posting a tackle for loss, two interceptions and a pass breakup.
What he brings to the table: Overlooked but important piece to the puzzle in the secondary. Combines with Collins to give UA starter-caliber depth at safety. Like Collins, competing for third safety spot in dime packages, a role he handled for stretches of the 2012 season. Played in 29 games in his first three seasons and has a strong grasp of both base and sub packages. Known more as a Mr. Dependable-type, Perry showed some big-play ability in the spring game.
29 P Cody Mandell (Sr.)
2012 season: One of four Special Teams Award recipients for the 2012 season, Mandell averaged 44.3 yards per punt. Of his 50 punts a season ago, 14 traveled 50 yards or more and 19 came to rest inside opponents' 20-yard line.
2013 spring practice: Delivered bomb after bomb in the A-Day game, finishing the afternoon with a 48.3-yard average on seven punts. Had three of his punts downed inside the 20.
What he brings to the table: Three-year starter whose gross and net averages have improved each season. Net average (the important one) of 39.5 in 2012 was the highest by a UA punter in the Nick Saban era. After coming to the Capstone as a walk-on in 2010, has taken steps from question mark to serviceable to All-SEC candidate.
