Henry set to break national record

Alabama commit Derrick Henry is closing in on perhaps the most coveted record in high school sports- Ken Hall’s 59-year old national career rushing record- and should break the record this evening when his Yulee (Fla.) (7-3) squad hosts Perry (Fla.) Taylor County (6-4) in the first round of the playoffs.

Henry, as a senior against Glades Day, a few hours after committing to Alabama.

For his career, Henry has rushed for 11,131 yards and 142 touchdowns on 1,244 carries-placing him just 102 yards from surpassing Hall’s total of 11,232.

Through 10 games as senior Henry has rushed for 3,270 yards and 44 touchdowns, averaging over 10 yards per carry.

To describe Henry’s senior season as ‘record breaking’ would be conservative. He’s staged a full on assault on the state of Florida and national record books, setting several new marks, including-

- September 21- Set state of Florida single game rushing record with 510 yards and 6 touchdowns against Jacksonville (Fla.) Jackson. Also passed Emmitt Smith’s career rushing total.

-September 28- Ties national record for most consecutive 100-yard games with 39 with 363 yards and 6 touchdowns against Belle Glade (Fla.) Glades Day.

-October 5- Sets national record for most consecutive 100-yard games with 40 (now at 44) with 190 yards and 3 touchdowns against Fernandina Beach (Fla.)

-November 9- Breaks Travis Henry’s (Frostproof HS/Tennessee/NFL) State of Florida single regular season (10 game) rushing record (3,011). Also breaks Maurice Wells’ (Sandalwood HS) Northeast Florida single-season rushing record.
