From a DT perspective, it's based off the notion that 3-techniques are more inclined to shoot gaps and get upfield from a a scheme perspective as opposed to taking on blocks.
At the end of the day it doesn't make a huge difference either way in terms of the NFL draft. UA had Dareus taken no. 3 above a pure 3-tech like Nick Fairley, and then you have a 3-tech like Suh go high as well. It's on a player-to-player basis.
