Alabama received big news on Thursday when Columbia (S.C.) Spring Valley outside linebacker Christian Miller called the Tide coaching staff to commit. The 6-foot-4, 215-pounder becomes the Tide’s 16th commitment in the 2014 class.
Miller becomes Alabama's 16th commimtent and first from South Carolina in the 2014 class.
“I just told the coaches. I went ahead called Coach (Chris) Rumph, who recruits me and told him it’s what I wanted to do. He was super excited. He had been waiting on me to commit for a long time. He passed the phone around to all the coaches, including Coach Saban. He wanted to make sure it’s what I wanted to do and not make me feel pressured or anything. It went really good.”
The commitment lifts a weight off of Miller’s shoulders, allowing him to focus on his senior season at Spring Valley.
“It feels really good. I didn’t want to rush anything. I feel like I knew where I want to go and once I found the best place for me, to go on ahead and do it. That’s how I feel about Alabama. It does feel good to have it done so I can focus on my senior year and relax a little.”
Miller notes that he picked Alabama for a multitude of reasons.
“I just felt like they were the best fit for me. Just looking at it from an athletic standpoint, I fit in their scheme perfect. The type of player I am is something they have a need for. Believe it or not, they’re one of the schools that offers early playing time at my position. Their facilities are the top in the country. I felt really comfortable there with Coach Rumph, Coach Napier, and Coach Smart- the whole coaching staff. The tradition is awesome. They have a lot to offer. Everything they do down there is first class.”
The top 50 prospect chose the Crimson Tide over Georgia and added that the Crimson Tide were his first choice all along, prior to his initial commitment to Florida in February.
“It really was kind of hard between the two of them. I was going back and forth and back and forth. Alabama was just one step ahead. And truthfully, that’s where I wanted to go in the beginning of the process. I didn’t know if they were going to give me a committable offer. That was my choice way early on. I love Coach Richt, Coach Muschamp and all the coaches, but I feel that Alabama is the best spot for me out of all of them.”
Miller looks to get back to the Capstone for a few games this fall.
“I’m not taking anymore visits other than Alabama. I know for a fact I’m going to the LSU game. I might make one to the earlier games as well. I’m going to save my official for after the season.”
Christian is the son of former South Carolina and New York Giants linebacker Corey Miller. The Palmetto State standout is the third highest-rated Tide pledge according to the industry- generated 247Comoposite. 247Sports ranks Miller at no. 40 overall and as the no. 3 outside linebacker nationally.
In 2012, Miller tallied 121 tackles, 21 tackles for loss, 14 sacks, 4 forced fumbles, and 3 fumble recoveries en route to being named a first team All-American by 247Sports.
