Tide flips four-star ATH

Alabama landed its 17th commitment of the 2014 class on Tuesday with Tuscaloosa (Ala.) Hillcrest athlete Keith Holcombe pledging to the Tide. The 6-foot-3, 220-pounder was previously committed to Mississippi State and also held offers from Georgia Tech, Kentucky, N.C. State, Southern Miss, and Vanderbilt.

Holcombe is Alabama's 17th commitment.

"Like I said previously, it has always been my dream to play football in the SEC. Since I've grown up here in Tuscaloosa and my dad played for Coach Bryant, to put on the same uniform as my dad did is something I can't even put into words. When that opportunity presented itself, it was one I couldn't refuse. I realize I am extremely lucky to be in this situation and I appreciate my family, my teachers and my coaches for all they have done to help me reach this point," Holcombe told 247Sports.

"My complete focus is now finishing my senior year at Hillcrest the right way, both on and off the field."

Holcombe committed to Mississippi State on July 19, but the recent offer from Alabama was too much to turn down. The four-star prospect has turned in multiple standout performances over the course of the summer, consistently posting sub-4.6 second 40-yard dash times, including at Alabama’s first prospect camp in June.

"I appreciate the opportunity Mississippi State offered me and they really did a great job in the recruiting process," added Holcombe. "I want to thank Coach Collins and Coach Mullen and the staff for all they did to make me and my family feel welcome. I made some really good friends and met some great people (at MSU)."

Holcombe’s father, Danny, was a three year letterman at offensive guard for Alabama during the early 1980’s.He becomes the second local prospect in Alabama’s 2014 class, joining Tuscaloosa County’s Bo Scarbrough. The last few Tuscaloosa signees have proved to have successful careers for the Tide with Brad Smelley (American Christian Academy) and Vinnie Sunseri (Northridge) both being multiple year starters.

Alabama offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier recruited Holcombe to the Crimson Tide. The Tuscaloosa native is the fourth in-state prospect to commit to the Crimson Tide.

Holcombe holds a grade of 90 from 247Sports and ranks as the no. 23 outside linebacker prospect nationally and as the no. 11 prospect in the state of Alabama.

As a junior at Hillcrest, Holcombe tallied 121 tackles, 18 tackles for loss, 4 sacks, 1 interception, 3 forced fumbles and 1 fumble recovery.
