*** A couple of NFL draft notes

  • I was on a conference call with Mel Kiper today, and he had a couple of interesting things to say:

    - Lacy's draft stock is rising quickly. Looks like a lot of teams have caught on and now project him to be the top running back in the draft and the only one who has a shot to go in the first round.
    - Kiper is very, very high on Fluker. Some teams aren't, but he thinks he has a real good shot to be a first-round selection.
    - Warmack's stock isn't dropping, but he's dipping in a lot of mock drafts because a lot of teams don't want to use a high first-round pick on a guard.

Look for a big draft update on the site during the next few days ...

  • Thanks. Think the Warmack stuff is misdirection. If I'm a team with a running game or wants one, he's a steal after the top 5 picks IMO

  • I agree. There could be some deception going on here with Warmack.

  • So, decent chance Alabama will produce the first RB taken in the draft for the 3rd straight year? Pretty outrageous.

You'd think we'd be able to sign a few more top flight RB's given this information! (G).

  • I saw anoter draft expert say that he heard from GM's around the league that there was no way Fuker lasted in to the 20's. The combine should solidify this thought.

you have to go back to 01 to find a guard taken in the top 15 (though he was taken 2nd overall) in leonard davis.

only 2 others have been in the top 20 since then, and one of those was in that same year.

if he makes top 15, he'll be doing something remarkable for a guard. though it does seem to be trending to take guards a little earlier than normal, as most years had none in the top 30, but the last 3 years has seen 4 in top 25, including 2 last year and the other top 20 player taken a couple years ago.

i'm guessing the 10-15 spot will be his magic #.

  • Good to see team's catching on to Lacy's potential as an NFL running back. He deserves to be the top RB taken after his production down the stretch.

Really hope the packers or falcons take him.

Pretty easy to see why 4 blue chip RBs chose to commit this year

Me too. Would be the best pick in years.

I agree. Good post. But is it just me or a weak draft other than DL or OL? If I was a GM, this is the perfect draft to take safe picks in the first couple of rounds and take some chances later.

  • Really happy for EL. Watching him run the ball when healthy was something else. I could only imagine what he could have done with three good years healthy. Maybe it's just ke but it always seemed like he never kind of got the deserved credit due to him being in MI and TR shadow so to speak.

  • In his latest first-round projection he has 16 defensive front-seven players listed, and said there's a few more in the mix who could move up or better fill a team's need.

He made a very strong point that he thinks the Chiefs should trade down from the No. 1 spot if they can. The problem is, which teams would want to move up, and for what?

As for Warmack, everyone's sold on him, I don't think there's any doubt about that. It's a matter of him being a good fit for a team. I don't think I've ever heard of a team moving up in the first round to take a guard, but I wouldn't be surprised if that happens.

  • Warmack might be the safest pick in the whole draft. He will be a pro bowler for the next 10 years. If he falls into the titans lap I would be ecstatic.

This makes a statement about how Alabama 'develops' talent versus just bringing it in, and see what happens as no doubt we have not recruited in this category quite as well as what is coming out on the other end.

Coffee, Ingram, Richardson, Lacy no doubt were elite, but not always the highest rated HS player.
