Crimson Tide Golfers Begin Play at Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters
Alabama looks to build on team title at the Puerto Rico Classic to open the spring
LAS VEGAS – The second-ranked Alabama men's golf team takes on one of the toughest fields in collegiate golf this weekend at the Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters on the par-72, 7,510-yard Southern Highlands Country Club.
The 2013 edition of the SHCM may have the strongest field yet as 10 of the top-11 teams in the country are part of the 15 teams participating. In addition, 12 of the nation's top 20 are included, all 15 teams are ranked in the top 32, according to the most recent Golf World/Nike Golf Coaches’ Poll.
Participating teams include Alabama (2), California (1), Duke (11), Florida (8), Georgia (10), Georgia Tech (7), New Mexico (6), Oklahoma (24), Oklahoma State (18), Stanford (13), Texas (5), Texas A&M (32), UCLA (3), UNLV (26) and Southern California (9).
The 54-hole tournament will be played over three days, with tee times beginning at 6 a.m. (CST) each morning off the first and 10th holes.
Head coach Jay Seawell’s team for the Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters will include All-Americans sophomore Justin Thomas, junior Cory Whitsett and junior Bobby Wyatt along with senior Scott Strohmeyer and junior Trey Mullinax.
The Crimson Tide opened the spring with a victory at the Puerto Rico Classic for the team’s second victory of the year (2012 Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate). Thomas leads the team with a 70.44 scoring average with Wyatt close behind averaging 71.47 strokes per round.

Women’s Golf Looks to Defend Title at Darius Rucker Intercollegiate
Alabama won the team title and Stephanie Meadow captured medalist honors
HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – The Alabama women’s golf team begins play on Friday at the 2013 Darius Rucker Intercollegiate at the par-71, 6,211-yard Long Cove Club.
The Crimson Tide won the weather-shortened Darius Rucker Intercollegiate last spring with a 36-hole total of 3-over-par 571. Junior Stephanie Meadow will also be looking to defend a title after capturing medalist honors with a 5-under 137 last spring.
The 2013 Darius Rucker Intercollegiate features one of the nation’s most challenging fields. Along with the second-ranked Crimson Tide, the tournament will feature six teams inside the top 15 in the most recent WGCA Coaches’ Poll including, No. 4 North Carolina, No. 8 Arkansas, No. 10 Vanderbilt, No. 12 Georgia and No. 14 Arizona State.
No. 20 Virginia is also in the field along with Auburn, Furman, LSU, South Carolina, TCU, No. 27 Tennessee, Central Florida and Wake Forest.
Head coach Mic Potter will start Stephanie Meadow, Jennifer Kirby, Hannah Collier, Emma Talley and Daniela Lendl for Alabama this weekend.
The 54-hole event begins on Friday, March 8, with the Crimson Tide teeing off at 8:15 a.m. (CST). Alabama will be paired with North Carolina and Arizona State in the first round. The Darius Rucker Intercollegiate concludes on Sunday, March 9.
The Crimson Tide opened the spring with a victory at the Puerto Rico Classic before a seventh-place finish at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate.
