*** Grant on a major reason scoring is down in basketball

  • ... is because of the technology that allows players to heavily scout their opponents and better prepare. I'll post the quote later today.

Completely disagree with this. Everyone has the same advantage. The main reason scoring is down is the talent doesnt stay in college as long as they used to. Players are longer and more athletic than ever but they are all playing on the same court.

    correct

not sure why grant would say that other than to cover up his own offensive shortcomings

Don't think he was covering up any shortcomings. Sounds like he's speaking about all of college basketball.

  • Agree with Bolden. The rule needs to be changed. This one and done crap is ruining college basketball and the NBA. They should change it back to players being able to go right after high school or make them stay 3 years like football. Or have both. If they don't go straight out of hs they have to stay 3 years. College and the NBA were so much better when players like Jordan, Ewing, Barkley, etc stayed in college for several years. I believe this improved the NBA also because fans had a reason to follow those guys in the NBA. They also were able to develop their talent further before playing in the pros so they were unbelievable by the time they got there. Just my 2 cents.

I think college basebal has it perfect. Players can test the waters after high school but must decide by a certain date. Once they commit to a college they cant be drafted again for three years. After that time they can enter again and test the waters. If they dont like their offers they can then go back to school for one final year. This is clearly the most fair and in the best interest of the players, the NBA, colleges and THE GAME.

With regards to scoring, I think Coach Grant is on to something. Very little is missed these days. Also as Bamafan8 said-very few kids can shoot, pullup AND drive-there are no real triple threats-it is all about athleticism and not skills. Having them stay three years would go a long way to developing complete offensive players.

Some want a 30 second clock-I think this will only mean even worse execution and more bad possessions although the scores may go up.

Give me the 70's and 80's hoops over todays game anyday. I miss Big Monday....

  • I think it's probably more a product of kids not knowing how to shoot and offenses like ours that are predicated around one player dribbling between the circles for 30 seconds while everyone stands with their hands on their hips.

We've missed plenty of wide open looks over the past few weeks. Not being able to hit a wide-open 15-foot jumpshot has absolutely nothing to do with scouting.

  • I think its a product of coaches coaching a more physical style of basketball. The refs have lost control on the game and now allow more contact than ever before.

This is in particular why there is a such a huge discrepancy in home versus away play by all teams. When on the road you are subjected to a beating that very teams and players can over come.

The increased "fouling" has also caused there to be an across the board reduction in inside scoring. Nobody is good enough to overcome the pushing and shoving that is going in the paint. Then if you go on the road and try and score down low you can kiss that good bye.

Until officiating can get a handle on what is and isn't a foul and then figure out how to call that consistently for both the home and the away team we are going to continue to see a deterioration of the game at the collegiate level.

For goodness sakes, Kentucky had 3 starters foul out at Tennessee the other night. In their previous game at home they may not have had 15 total team fouls. Look back at what Auburn, to be specific Rob Chubb, were allowed to do in Auburn versus us then at Kentucky he is hit with 2 quick fouls and on the bench plus another post player got a T'd up for a shove under the basket.

Coaches can't blame officials but fans most certainly can. I blame coaches for teaching what is fouling and calling it defense but I also blame officials for their inability to call a game.

  • As much as I would love to take a jab at our Offensive "philosophy", this really has been a nationwide topic. Some of the low scoring games this year have been ridiculous, Ucheat v Georgetown...Bama v Barn, etc. Overall points are down this year but I think it's because of the overall focus on 3 pt attempts rather than a balanced inside outside game. Players seem to be abandoning a good jump shot.

  • Pittsburg only scored 42 vs ND last night, and it was a home game.

  • A lot of things contribute to the low scoring. Lack of fouls against the defense, the one and done's, 35 second shot clock(should be 30 seconds), AAU basketball and the focus on superstars while they're in high school, etc.

Honestly, the NBA needs to re-vamp its draft eligibility practices. The NBA doesn't have the minor league system like the MLB that allows the 18/19-year old kids to not be overwhelmed their first year at the pro level. So many busts in the NBA because you get undeveloped players who see their career die in the D-League. You should be 3 years out of high school to declare for the NBA draft. Nerlens Noel needs at least 1 more year in college to develop his offensive game.

The NBA should also seriously invest in a minor league system. Do like the MLB and put minor league NBA teams in smaller towns. It builds your fanbase. It allows for more talent to develop and improve the product that ultimately goes on the floor for all NBA teams.

    Spot on.
It is basically what the NBA was when Riley coached the Knicks and 89 to 85 was a high scoring game.
