*** Jesse Williams did 30 bench reps

  • agourlay said...

    This.

Not sure why everyone hear's a 1RM and decides clearly he can rep 50x due to this fact.
Like here, why don't you train heavy for 8 weeks, like 2 (reps) x 10 (sets) ... Now jump right into crossfit. Lemme know how it goes LMFAO, should translate easily no ?

Because the staff said that at Bama's pro day lastyear Jesse broke the combine bench record, and that is why everyone on here expected he would break the bench record. Not like everyone on here just expected that he would do 52 reps because of his max, but everyone did expect it because we have been told that he has broken it before, plus it has been hyped up for a long time. FYI football is an endurance sport and workouts are alternated between strength/mass/endurance. What good is strength without endurance, and what good endurance without strength, being one of the best football players in the country you need both.

Dead on about cross fit, started going about 2 months ago. Sure was getting my ass kicked as not the same as walking around doing some lifting sets. Having strength helps in something's, but its far from the only item needed

30 reps is still an elite number for the bench press. Expectations for our guys always seem to get overhyped—there's nothing to be ashamed about 30 reps. That's good!

Trent Richardson did 25 reps on the bench press and people also felt disappointed. 25 reps for a running back is very good, though.

Trent also told scouts he was doing 25 and then stopping.

Really wanted the record for jesse though

Didn't somewhere it say that Jesse himself said he would break the combine record? I could be wrong but I thought I read that somewhere.

Yeah but by endurance they're talking about doing 4x100m sprints or what not, overall cardiovascular endurance. Not massive drop sets on bench press. I don't think they are busting out FST-7 or any other body building techniques that tend to be used when hypertrophy is the goal. A circuit, I could understand, when you lift fairly heavy, then move on right to the next exercise, but that's a totally different story.

The biggest issue with high rep bench is the triceps, especially since they need to lock out

No doubt, especially coming from your power lifting background haha. It's good to get a variety i find. I'll do 3 days, typical body part splits, then 2 days of sprinting, athletic drills, then two days of circuit type work. Just spices it up after years of doing the same thing.

I found myself getting bored when I went back to a normal gym so have stayed at CF full time and try to mix in the isolated movements when possible. It's very challenging and some days very humbling. Need to get better at the snatch and clean and jerk as to be more fluid and not muscle it. Would like to enter a CF comp this year if possible. Muscle ups are pretty darn tough as well

  • I saw a pretty ripped former fitness instructor (his story anyway) come into a body pump class once. He told the instructor he'd never done that particular class. I heard the instructor (female) tell him he may want to put a total of 20-30 lbs on the bar. He had a sort of sneer on his face and loaded up about 60 or 70lbs. He got pissed and left about 1/2 way thru the class.

The reps are extremely intense and designed to hit your lower body large muscles from every perspective in terms of endurance. I was a loooong way from my peak at the time, but still...I was once very athletic and played 3 sports. I put 20 lbs on there and it kicked my ass. Particularly the lower body where you have to take your own body weight into consideration.

Point is, if you train for mass and explosion, it's not likely you're equipped for extreme reps and vice-versa.

Yeah, because Cochran uses such a generic training program, and sticks with 4x10 for everything! I know for a fact that Cochran uses some pretty crazy rep ranges, like GVT with 15 second intervals between sets, that's worse than FST-7, and also pretty sure that would qualify for muscular endurance as opposed to cardio. Cochran is one of the best in world, his routines are anything but ordinary.

The reason Jesse could break the record lastyear and not come close this year, is because lastyear when the season was over he was right back in the weight room training, this year he has taken a big break since the season ended, fresh off of surgery, and his endurance is way down. Has nothing to do with the training program he's doing, but everything to do with the training program he isn't doing.

You think the stuff about last year is still true?

I just assumed all BS after reading this?

I stand corrected if true - wouldn't have thought he used those, guess I should know better then to doubt SC lol shrug

Who knows? I'm pretty sure one of the staff, Walsh if I'm not mistaken, reported that he broke the record.

I doubt Jesse has been working out since the season ended, he went home, just had athroscopic knee surgery, and I haven't heard of him training anywhere. If he has indeed taken over a month off from working out that would take a toll on his endurance and strength, plus even a change in diet can affect your strength. I seriously doubt any of that would contribute to 20 reps less, but who knows. I have a hard time believing he did a lastyear, and with an extra year under Cochran he can only get 30.

True, but maybe you answered your own question. Maybe he needs to be doing a combination of both. I do CrossFit 5 days a week and lift 4 after I'm done. You can have both, but the muscles have to be trained/conditioned to do so. I know you know all this....

And let me add that I'm not questioning Cochran's methods. He certainly know much more than me....

Players don't prep for the combine w/ CSC, they go to facilities that specialize in combine prep.

  • 30 is such a round number. i'm guessing he did 30 and stopped on purpose.
