*** Jesse Williams did 30 bench reps

  • I am be no means a weight lifter, but the big guys that do more than 30 reps train for that exercise and it can take months. And if you don't, that's about it even for a guy as strong as Jesse Williams. I suspect that he hasn't spent the past two months training for this. Williams has tremendous upper body strength and this number -- whether 30,40 or 50 wasn't going to change his draft. Williams was a very good player for Alabama and will be a good pro, but I think his draft lot is pretty set, even before the combine. His weaknesses will improve over time but he needs reps and he's just not a 1st grade -- doesn't mean some team will not pick him up in the first, but that's not his grade.

    Lucky,

Why wouldn't Jessie train for the combine tests? As you well know, it's very common for NFL draft prospects to train with a combine prep specialist for 6-8 weeks leading up to the combine or pro day.

I agree with you that anything over 30 reps isn't going to make much of a diff in where he is drafted.

I probably didn't articulate that well. I'm sure he has trained for it, but lifting 225 40-50 times isn't about explosion and would likely be the opposite of what he needs to do for his day to day job. It would probably take him 4-8 weeks to change. Its just different and the guys that are technical lifters on this board can better explain than me.

The reason everyone thought he was going to break the record is because is was reported, on here, that he did break it last at our pro day. That was his first year in Cochrans program, this year he had a full off season in the program but does 22 less reps? Cochran uses some pretty crazy ranges, and that's how you would prepare for this. As I said in an earlier post it has more to do with what program Jesse hasn't been doing, than what program he has been doing, he has taken some time off and had surgery. When you get up to Jesse's strength, you have to do some out of the box stuff to continue to keep growing, cause the body's natural response is adaptation.

That's true, However that is the metric that the NFL uses to gauge upper body strength. (even though it would test endurance more so than strength for any player getting over 15 reps)

  • A general rule of thumb to calculate your 225 reps into a 1RM is to add 10 lbs for ever rep, after 1, to 225.

    So if you lifted 225 x 5 (225 + 10 + 10 + 10 + 10) = 265

This number is pretty accurate for anything under 11 reps but can get VERY skewed once you go beyond 220 reps.
