*** Look for a draft update later today ...

  • Mel Kiper did a conference call with reporters today and I think he was asked more about Alabama than any NFL team (and it's not over yet).

Hightower's stock is up and he and a lot of other experts are now projecting him to be a solid first-round pick.
Said Barrett Jones and Robert Lester both made the right decision in coming back.
The hernia surgery doesn't affect Barron's draft stock.
High on Richardson, but isn't sure he'll be a top 5 pick.

  • Did he mention anything on Upshaw?

  • Yep - said he dropped just a touch from the Combine, but is still a solid first-rounder.

You all know how fast Mel talks, so transcribing what he said will take me a little while when he finishes up. He's going long today.

I don't get him dropping b/c of the combine. Just watch the freakin' film. frustrated

  • I don't think Upshaw dropping has anything to do with him at the combine as much as Ingram helping himself. Melvin Ingram blew some people away with his 40 time.

  • I think some people are using that as an excuse - and apparently he had some knee tendinitis - but there are two things to keep in mind:

    1) It takes the "experts" a little time to catch up with their evaluations.
    2) The primary reason for where players get drafted is due to need.

So in the overall scheme of things I don't think it'll affect his status assuming he runs and does as expected later this month.

I agree with you 100%. I don't think you should ever drop a guy because of the combine unless his measureables are well below the acceptable range for his position. Upshaw seems to be headed to a 4-3 team that has some 3-4 principles from what I've gleaned and will likely play a combo Jack/DE. He is plenty athletic and strong enough to excel in this role.

Jabrill Peppers...More I watch, the more I'm convinced he is the best player in the 2014 class. Barring injury, he will do special things.

Ingram did have a strong Combine - but a lot of teams have to figure out if they consider Ingram and Upshaw to be a linebacker, end, or both - i.e. how each would fit in their scheme and then who would be a better fit.

What do you think about moving a guy way up in the draft because of Combine performance? I love to see our guys do well at it, but sometimes I think way too much stock is put into it.

If a guy puts up a great Combine Performance and he wasn't considered a great prospect before the Combine, I think it warrants more film review. Basically a closer look as to whether he's a great athlete but not a great football player, perhaps his college scheme didn't maximize his potential, maybe he takes plays off.

Everybody has their own opinion/criteria in terms of how much stock to put into a Combine and I'm not saying my perspective is correct......but I'm more of a film guy as I think what a guy does on the football field in pads is a much better predictor of how successful he will be in the NFL than what a guy does in shorts & t-shirt. Also, what level of competition is he playing against on the field matters IMO.

"Best Athlete" and how muscled or cut up a guy looks doesn't always correlate with "Best Football Player". A good recent example would be Vernon Gholston who played at Ohio St and was drafted #6 overall by the Jets in 2008. The Jets released him after the 2010-11 season. The Bears signed him in July 2011 and then released him in Aug 2011. See the link for his Combine Results. They are great and he's "muscled-up"...but he isn't a great football player in the league.

I guess a guy like Poe, who had an incredible Combine and played at a "no-name" program, is a good example of a guy getting a lot more looks at his film, etc. Good point.

I agree with you 100% re: film and level of competition trumping short and t-shirt performances in front of scouts. Nothing that Upshaw did or didn't do at the Combine should have any bearing on his draft stock. Look at the film, look at the level of competition played against, look at the coaching received at the college level, and that is all you need to see.
