  • Just amazing that Del Rio decided to walk on here over other scholarship offers. I know his family doesn't worry about money, but there's still the ego-factor of being on scholarship versus walking on.

You kind of have to think that eventually Bateman or McLeod eventually transfer as that seems to be the thing that QBs do if they aren't getting playing time, but Del Rio seems like he would be a 5 year guy regardless of what happens and could even end up our starter one day or at least a very solid back-up.

I would think with him deciding to come here and walk on over other scholarships that he is probably imagining a coaching career down the line and figures he might as well be around the best. That would be my guess......although I don't want to sell this kid short.

I don't know Kelly Johnson. Perhaps you do. If so, please tell us how different it was for him to be a starter on a BCSNCG winning team, knowing he was a walk-on. Thanks! I'll just hang up and listen.

It goes a lot deeper than that. Scholarship players are able to receive so much more as far as training, medical attention, and nutritional items go while they are there. Everything a scholarship player receives for free, walk ons have to pay for themselves. The extra items like the sweat suits and things like that you see the players in......walk ons have to purchase while they are provided for the rest of the team. Training tape and other items like that are free for scholarship players. Walk on players have to pay for that stuff. Walk ons also have to handle all medical procedures with their own insurance, while scholarship players get their medical procedures covered by the University.

Those are the points that I was getting at. I am sure Kelly Johnson is very pleased with his time at Bama, as may Del Rio or any walk on that plays here, but there is a difference for them. Those things may not be a big deal to some, but they are things that can be hard to deal for others.

  • I have it on good authority that Kelly Johnson owes the athletic dept for no less than SEVEN rolls of athletic tape from this past season, along with an undisclosed amount of pre-wrap.

If it isn't handled soon, bye bye BCS title and 15 schollys.

Sometimes I forget things that I am supposed to remember. With that said, I've met Jeremy Shelley and his parents several times. As you know, he was a *walk on* for his entire career at UA. If his family can pay for his tuition, room, books, board, sweat suits and athletic tape, and proclaim for every year of his participation at Alabama, that he was fortunate to be a part of it, I'd feel comfortable speculating that the Del Rio family won't get too bent out of shape paying the University for the same things. Just my speculation, mind you.

    agree 100%

while i wouldnt predict he jumps bateman or maybe morris, id say he is immediately well ahead of mcleod and soon ely, if ely is here next year.

he just has that moxy you want in a qb and is not afraid of competition at all.

but yeah, i would have gone somewhere i could have started or at least only had one guy to compete with

He would have been deadly in Okie States offense.

its also a little different for a qB, where egos are usually abnormally large. a full back walking on is completely different than a qb walking on, who hopes one day to be the starter and the face of the team

I am not saying they are going to get bent out of shape.

I was saying that it is unusual to see a recruit of his level make this decision. Obviously, with his dad, it is a much different situation for sure.

I was pointing out how wonderful it was that he made that decision for us and that I think he sees himself as a future coach and thinks it would be more beneficial to him to me at Alabama with Saban for his future. Plus, I think he is very much an option as a starting QB in the future, but definitely a great back-up to have around.

You think a Del Rio can't easily do that?

  • Walk on's have to pay for their own tape? I don't believe this at all.

  • Going to be very interesting to see how the reps shake out over the next few weeks. A lot of talented young QB's battling for a back up spot. Great stuff Chris.

  • I think the writing is on the wall for Ely, as some have eluded to. Morris has a year under his belt, but haven't really heard/read anything glowing about his development. Just my opinion, but if we can keep AJ healthy this season, Bateman is the next guy. That being said, I could very wrong about all of this, hopefully not.

Of course he can. Players do it all the time. You just don't see this level prospect do it that often.

I was saying it was a very positive thing for our program that someone like that would want to deal with doing so when he could have gone to many other good programs and not had to.

    ^ This

I don't think they have to pay for sweats or gear either. They also receive the same medical attention. If a walk on is injured in practice he most certainly will be treated by the same Drs and Trainers.

  • There is def a difference in being a scholarship athlete vs walk on. There is also a diff vs an invited walkon vs jus showing up an trying to walk on. But none of the reasons u listed are correct. I was a scholarship athlete the life of a walkon can be brutal. Most are lucky to get noticed enough to play special teams. Walkons can get tape, can eat with the team, it may be against ncaa rules to receive work out gear but I can assure most teams will not enforce this rule.

im im not sure. But I can assure u most teams probably dont enforce this.

They most certainly do get treated by the same Dr that scholarship athletes do. They just aren't covered by the same insurance policy as a scholarship athlete. That is something they have to take care of on their own through their own family. Doesn't mean that the doctors can't work on them.
