There is def a difference in being a scholarship athlete vs walk on. There is also a diff vs an invited walkon vs jus showing up an trying to walk on. But none of the reasons u listed are correct. I was a scholarship athlete the life of a walkon can be brutal. Most are lucky to get noticed enough to play special teams. Walkons can get tape, can eat with the team, it may be against ncaa rules to receive work out gear but I can assure most teams will not enforce this rule.
im im not sure. But I can assure u most teams probably dont enforce this.

Just amazing that Del Rio decided to walk on here over other scholarship offers. I know his family doesn't worry about money, but there's still the ego-factor of being on scholarship versus walking on.
You kind of have to think that eventually Bateman or McLeod eventually transfer as that seems to be the thing that QBs do if they aren't getting playing time, but Del Rio seems like he would be a 5 year guy regardless of what happens and could even end up our starter one day or at least a very solid back-up.
I would think with him deciding to come here and walk on over other scholarships that he is probably imagining a coaching career down the line and figures he might as well be around the best. That would be my guess......although I don't want to sell this kid short.

It goes a lot deeper than that. Scholarship players are able to receive so much more as far as training, medical attention, and nutritional items go while they are there. Everything a scholarship player receives for free, walk ons have to pay for themselves. The extra items like the sweat suits and things like that you see the players in......walk ons have to purchase while they are provided for the rest of the team. Training tape and other items like that are free for scholarship players. Walk on players have to pay for that stuff. Walk ons also have to handle all medical procedures with their own insurance, while scholarship players get their medical procedures covered by the University.
Those are the points that I was getting at. I am sure Kelly Johnson is very pleased with his time at Bama, as may Del Rio or any walk on that plays here, but there is a difference for them. Those things may not be a big deal to some, but they are things that can be hard to deal for others.

As someone that was invited to walk-on in baseball, the walk-ons there definitely had to pay for items......and it was definitely accounted for.
Different sport as there were differences in that sport between a full scholarship athlete, partial scholarships (don't have those for football and basketball), and walk ons.
Yes, walk ons can eat with the team as well, but it is something that is not provided to them for free. I never said they couldn't eat together.
