Are you counting the ex CMG as one of the ones who could? I have not followed your posts in the past, but were you just as vocal over his last 5 years as you are now?

I can't speak for Nash but I wanted CMG gone after our first non-NCAA tournament year and thought he should be after the 2nd.

We'd be comfortably in the tournament with wins over Mercer, Tulane, Auburn and LSU today.

I have a hard time believing there are only 5-10 coaches in basketball who could've won those.

Win those, and we're 22-5 and 12-2 in the league and tied for first.

You are missing my point. I understand that. You are blaming Grant for his coaching solely. This collection of players is not that great is my point. Only one player, Releford, shows any significant improvement in his personal game.

He gas gone from a liability shooting outside to our best shooter. You can't play 5 feet off him anymore. I would even say Engstrom and Gueye have shown improvement in their game. We have guys who we DEPEND on that were highly recruited that seem to have done little to improve their game. These weaknesses are shown each year and a player must work tirelessly to diminish those weaknesses.

A coach can draw plays and can coach scheme and fundamentals, but a player has to execute, shoot and dribble.

While you think he has done a horrible job, I think he has done a good job to get this group to this point.

He didn't lose at auburn, this guys gave up. They could not have cared less about being there the second half.

These are Grants players that he recruited, but I blame a lot on the team as well.

His job as head coach is developing recruits that he signs. He put together this collection of players. How is he not responsible for their output? Don't remember anyone applying that same rational to Mike Shula.

The collection of players might not be all that great, but UA has considerable more talent than Auburn, Mercer, Tulane, and Dayton. Three of those losses are at home. There is zero excuse to lose to these teams at home in year 4 of Coach Grant's tenure and thats why we'll be in the NIT in March. If the players aren't getting better a lot of that falls on the coaching staff.

IIRC, Grant is responsible for recruiting as well. I think Steele is the only Gottfried holdover.

He's also responsible for developing players.

Not sure who else would head up these areas if not Grant.

This isn't year 1. It's year 4. It's on him. If his players still don't give a chit after all the suspensions and stunts, he's not getting through to them. Either way, he's paid well to make sure our team is ready and motivated to beat inferior teams. They are neither far too often.

  • Two LSU players had double doubles...

    SweetHomeNYC

  • @Koko, Brian, and Nash

I know that these players are Grant's and maybe I came across as they were the wrong ones to get. I did not mean that, I love our guys and want them to succeed.

Sure we lost games we shouldn't have and Grant is the one that will be held accountable. Sure I am ticked that most likely Bama is headed to the NIT.

We are missing a piece to the puzzle. Is that Grant's fault from recruiting, yes.

Would we be better if Mitchell were still here and Jacobs could catch and had more than one move to score? We would be he'd to beat and the offense would look a lot better.

Can Grant make Jacobs a scorer? No.
He has to work on that on his own and figure it out. Will he is the question.

I remember Michael Ansley was like a bull in a china shop as a Freshman. By his second year he was better and by the time he left he was a #1 option. It took a ton of work and it wasn't all in practice with the team with the coach.he had to develop his on game.

A coach can show you how to dribble and how to shoot, but he can't do it for you or create moves for you to get shots.

I am just saying that our guys need to do a lot to improve themselves individually to make the team better as a team. There are too many one trick ponies on this team.

Should Grant be fired? The only answer to that question now is no.

Calipari is not going to make the tourney either and he has all americans lining up to play for him.

I am not comparing the two coaches, but they are loaded with talent in his 4th year or so and will be NIT bound as well probably.

  • FYI, losing Green should not have turned us into an NIT team. Especially when the league is worse and the bubble is weaker.

The fact that Green is gone and we're NIT bound is pathetic.

Difference is is Calipari has proven he can win and some years just dont go your way. Grant's teams have looked like this since he got here. Even with JG and Mitchell we gave up huge leads and lost to teams we should have blown out of the water. Not sure how you can not see Grant is in over his head coaching with the big boys in the major conferences. Coaching for VCU is much easier than Bama. So you say its Grant's fault he recruited Jacobs and MG but he cant make him a scorer. Well that shows me that he doesnt know what he is looking for when recruiting. Which is part of his job. Its Grant's job to make sure we do not consistently lose to joke teams as well. That is another part of his job he is failing at. If this was our football team we would be calling for Saban's head. Why should it be any diff for the bball coach. You have said it yourself that he is missing on post recruits, it seems every year, he is loosing to teams he shouldnt with quote all this great talent. Heck even in a lot of games we win the dude is out coached. To me if we wouldnt take this from our football team and coach we shouldnt take this from out basketball. Sure we are not going to win the Champ but we should expect better than what we are getting now and that is obvious.

  • We have a real loser mentality as a fanbase and dont think that doesnt affect the program. We need to realize that right now we are relying on four sophomores, two freshmen, and a junior to lead us. While these guys were highly recruited, in basketball the sure-thing 5 star is 1000x better than your basic 4 star. Basketball is a different animal and our fans' basketball iq is near zero. Most of our "fans" are ppl passing time between football season and spring practice. It was inevitable, regardless of whether grant landed 2 more big men, that we were going to take a step back this year losing Green. We were a bubble team last year that got in. Whats a step back from that? A bubble team that doesnt. We are right where i expected us to be. If we dont take a big step forward next year (6 or 7 seed in ncaa tourney) then Grant is useless.

I mean coming into the season we had a team coming off historically bad shooting campaign with 0 post presence. We have been lucky we arent in georgia, south carolina, or auburns class right now. The 7-0 start raised expectations too high. We need the NIT this year as much as we did 2 years ago. Be patient people and dont quit the team or we will end up like georgia and south carolina as apathy will breed content and worse than mediocrity.

Most of the "fans" you seem to be referring to in this thread attended/watched on TV 95% of the basketball games the last 10 years and love the basketball program as much as the football program. So you should probably find a new M.O. People who don't care/pay attention/love the program wouldn't be posting on internet message boards during and after every game from Mercer to Charleston Southern to LSU.

If you can honestly read over the past 10 threads of basketball threads and tell me that the people disagreeing with your assessment have 0 basketball IQ then you are just fooling yourself to fool yourself.

Losing to Mercer, Dayton, Tulane, and Auburn sealed our fate. I don't know why people are acting like LSU was the nail in the coffin.
