*** Softball takes first loss of season, 8-4 to No. 4 Florida

  • TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – In a back-and-forth affair, the top-ranked Alabama softball team dropped its first contest of the season, falling to No. 4 Florida, 8-4, Wednesday night at Rhoads Stadium. After the loss, the Crimson Tide moves to 22-1 on the season.

A three-run sixth proved to be the difference as the Gators (23-1) came back to take the lead, one they would not relinquish.

Florida outhit Alabama, 10-6, the first time the Tide had been on the other end of the hit column this season. Senior Kayla Braud paced the Tide at the plate with two hits, scoring a run and stealing two bases.

Junior Jackie Traina (10-1) was tagged with her first loss on the season, allowing eight runs – seven earned - on nine hits in 6 1/3 innings pitched while striking out six.

After Florida opened the game with one run in the first inning, Alabama seized the lead in the third, rewarded for its patience. A wild pitch scored sophomore Jadyn Spencer and then the Tide loaded the bases and junior Molly Fichtner drew the walk to score Braud.

The Gators evened the score in the top of the fifth but the Tide answered right back. After a leadoff hit by freshman Haylie McCleney, junior Kaila Hunt doubled off the wall in right-center to score the fleet-footed rookie all the way from first.

With two outs in the frame the Tide added another as sophomore Danae Hays singled up the middle to give Alabama a 4-2 lead.

Alabama will open Southeastern Conference play on the road in Knoxville to face off against No. 8 Tennessee. The two teams will start the three game series on Friday, March 8, with first pitch slated for 5:30 p.m. CT.

  • Guys, it will be OK. Florida has a more experienced team right now. Our team will be better than them by the end of the year.
I firmly believe that we have a team that will be in the championship series at the end of the year.

All we need to do is stay near the top and get a good seed at the end of the year!

We handled them pretty well last year, taking 2 of 3 in the regular season and hammering them for the SEC tourney title as well.

Also, Bama leads the all-time series 30-24 against Florida and has won 3 out of the last 5 against the Gators. I really don't know why y'all think UF has our number.

That's the party line even though it's totally wrong. Everyone is basing that opinion on the WCWS 2 years ago with a completely different team.

They really have a very young team. However, I still think we are going to be fine against them and everyone else we face this year.

Let's face it Traina had a really bad night, all pitchers have those outings, just happenings to be the night against Florida.

Tenn is always tough. I hope we can sweep these games.

As far as rolling or shaving the bats you guys were talking about. I really doubt they could get away with it at that level. I coach a 12U team and at a tournament in the fall there was a team that just dept hitting it to the fence and all the girls were using the same bat! Now might not be too weird in some circumstances, but at this age, you can have girls who are still 10 and 5 ft tall and then some who have just turned 13 and be 5'6'. So to have those girls using the same bat, we knew something was off. And even at this tournament in Rome Ga they had a machine to check the weight of the composite bat to make sure it wasn't shaved or rolled. By the way, it was illegal and the team has been banned from tournament play, but not the coach!

How would checking the weight of a bat indicate if a bat was rolled? I know rolling a bat doesn't give as much competitive advantage as shaving it but rollling a bat does not change the weight. It only simulates bat use, which gives the bat more pop.

Those machines check the weight and the compression, I'm sorry I should have been more clear as to the exact nature of the measurement.

I really don't care if it is rolled or shaved, it is an unfair advantage and dangerous. And how in hell do coaches and parents tell these kids, you can cheat at softball, but don't cheat on your test at school!

To think that coaches at the 12U level would risk other 10,11, 12 year old girls to the hazzards of using a juiced bat still amazes me. But after a few season of coaching travel, I shouldn't be.

Oh no, this is fast pitch. My starting 12 year old has a 52-53 mph fast ball then comes back with a 32-35 mph change up. You should see those batters knees shake on that combo.

She has a great drop ball and curve ball and is working on her screw ball and rise ball. My second pitcher is about at 47 mph.

And remember at this level, they are pitching from 43'. The level of play is just blows me away when I think of my level of play at 12.

Agree. Not only is it dirty and unethical, but it's dangerous as hell.

Tim Walton seems like the type of toolbag that would do it, too. Assume they check at the WCWS level, but I stand by my opinion that something screwy was going on that Sunday when they beat us twice to advance. They got in Kelsi's head but some of those balls were leaving the stadium completely, and UF didn't seem to even be swinging it that well on a couple that left.

Also interesting, some of their girls who weren't power hitters but were bombing away two years ago came back last year and saw their numbers go down. Things that make you go "hmmmm....".
