*** The Great Debate (greatest plays)

  • Ok everyone, we have some special things coming up over the next fee weeks and I'm going to tip you all off about one them because I want to get your feedback before I write the article.

This is a tough one ... we're going to name the 10 biggest plays in Crimson Tide history.

Some of them are obvious, some obviously are not.

Have fun with this, folks, because we sure will ...

  • Wow, this should be interesting. I wasn't alive for the Bryant days but I'll say The Goal Line Stand is obviously way up there. Langham's INT in the inaugural SEC title game was a biggie. I mean hey...AJ to Cooper this year was a game winner in the SEC title game which allowed us to play for and win it all against hated ND. Pretty huge right there.

Cody's block against UT secured a win against a heated rival and kept us in the title chase which we eventually won in 09.

I'll say The Kick and The Sack are not top 10 plays to me. Neither resulted in or directly influenced titles of any kind and both happened against mediocre teams. I realize the significance of both but I'm all about the 'ships.

    Should be a fun conversation...

  • Would the plane ride to Miami v ND count as a play?(g)

  • The Goal Line Stand is first and everything else competes for second.

  • 5 in no particular order for consideration:

    -goal line stand
-pick some big play out of the 1st rose bowl we went to
-can you count the entire 1971 USC game as a play or at least the 1st offensive play we had there since it was the begining of the wishbone
    -Langham's INT in SECCG
-Cody's block in 2009 UT game because it kept us on track for the title game

Lots more and I wish I knew specific plays more from the Bear years during title seasons.

  • Yeldon 3rd down run, 2012 SEC Championship.

    taylo051

  • 1. The kick
    2. The Goal Line stand
    3. The strip
    4. Rocky Block
    5. The int (Langham)
    6. Alexander romp in swamp in OT
    7. The block at PSU 89'
    8. The Sack

More older ones I'm sure deserve mention but I'll say the last two from this past season:

    9. The screen to Yeldon
    10. The tipped pass at the end of the SECCG

  • I'm not sure it merits top ten, but I do think it should be mentioned as I believe it doesn't get anywhere near enough attention: The Anders sack against Texas causing the fumble recovered by Upshaw. At the time of the sack, the game was not in hand and the fumble pretty much sealed the deal.

  • Goal line stand, 4th down vs PSU, without a doubt, but George Teague's take away "Gimme that" is my favorite play of all time, even though it was nullified by a penalty.

  • The guidlines should be the play was instrumental to a critical win leading to the National Champship!
The Cody block against Tenn for example, without which we would be short one NC. I don't remember if the run down and take away was the difference in winning the NC are not but it was one of the greatest plays i ever saw..

You don't have to win a championship to do something special. Some things are bigger than annual titles. Like maybe the first time an African American stepped on the field for Bama. That's pretty big right there! IMO

  • Well Rocky Block was certainly the loudest.

  • What are the criteria? Game changers vs statement plays vs game winners vs inspirational/sheer determination plays? Each is slightly different.

  • Third quarter touchdown pass that gave Auburn the lead and ultimately the win in 2006 Iron Bowl leading to the firing of Shula and hiring of Saban. I'm just kidding in a way, but think about if bama would've won...

  • Chris... love to see some historical reverence as well: Please keep plays like Run in the Mud in the mix; even as far back as Pooley Hubert Rose Bowl 3d qtr TD Run would be great!
    My lifetime:
    1. Goal Line Stand... defined RT for a generation
    2. Langham Int... The most important play of '92 Champs season
    3. The Sack... Crushed the will of the one team The Bear truly struggled with
    4. The Kick... Victory from the throws of defeat
    5. Rocky Block... Seminal play to start the Dynasty
Honorable Mention: Teague rundown of Lamar is actually my absolute favorite of all time, but it just didn't have the tangible impact of the others. Intangible impact was off the charts, though!
    RTR!

Those are all great plays! However Langham int. In championship game was great, and of course the int. Against the barn was big. I think people forget that the closest we came to getting beat that whole years was at Miss ST. They played us straight up and hard in the second half. If you remember Langham blocked a punt and picked it up and ran it in to go up 17 to 0 in fist half. Had he not made that play, I believe that was the game we could of lost. It was the only game that year where we got in tousle and lost mo. And they ran it right at the NG James G in the 2nd half like no one else all year. That was our only weakness, right up middle against a 3 4 front, but they were huge across the line.- well it wasn't our only weakness, Mal Moore play calling was pretty bad, I remember them running the same play action pass play 7 time in a row!(interference call kept drive going). Bottom line is Langham was THE MAN!!!!

Respectfully disagree. I think we go on to win the SEC and therefore the NC even if we lose to Tennessee.

  • several good nominees in this thread...

I would think Rocky Block has to be included.

    Goal line stand- PSU

    TJ yeldon Screen Pass

    Teague in the NC

    Langham Pick 6 92

    this would be hard...

Chris- Could you do like 25 and let us Vote for the Top 10? or 20?
