*** The Great Debate (greatest plays)

  • HADOUKEN said...

Wow, this should be interesting. I wasn't alive for the Bryant days but I'll say The Goal Line Stand is obviously way up there. Langham's INT in the inaugural SEC title game was a biggie. I mean hey...AJ to Cooper this year was a game winner in the SEC title game which allowed us to play for and win it all against hated ND. Pretty huge right there.

Cody's block against UT secured a win against a heated rival and kept us in the title chase which we eventually won in 09.

I'll say The Kick and The Sack are not top 10 plays to me. Neither resulted in or directly influenced titles of any kind and both happened against mediocre teams. I realize the significance of both but I'm all about the 'ships.

    Should be a fun conversation...

'ship or no 'ship, beating au with a last second 52 yard FG will always be a top 10 and usually a top 5 play for most Bama fans. Mediocre or not, that au team had Heisman winner Bo Jackson. And beating Bo in his heisman year by ripping their hearts out at the last second is an all time great play. Period!

You don't have to win a championship to do something special. Some things are bigger than annual titles. Like maybe the first time an African American stepped on the field for Bama. That's pretty big right there! IMO

The ass whooping to BAMA by USC that preempted the recruiting of African-Americans was pretty big, but that would take up the Top 10 ......

  • The Stand is immortal. BUT...if McNeal does not make a stop on the PSU receiver before crossing the goal line there would have been no Stand. McNeal's play won't make the Top Ten, but it should make the top of any 'under-rated' plays. The Stand was due to a group of players clogging the middle, McNeal was mano a mano against a player with a head of steam.

In the same mode, I have to mention Bell's catch of a pass against the barn that led to The Kick. Bell caught the ball ran across the field as he picked up yards then managed to run of of bounds and stopped the clock. The clock did not stop after first downs at that time, so if he was tackled the game was over and no Kick.

Again, a very seldom mentioned big play.

Of course The Block, TJ'S screen pass vs LSU. Teague's strip of the ball which was a big play in denying MIami great field position if not a TD, but had to be very de-moralizing for the Canes.

  • The Mark Ingram screen, catch, and run against Florida in the 2009 SECCG is vastly underrated. If that play doesn't happen things very well may have gone differently.

Just wanted to throw that play out there and give some props to my boy, and greatest running back in Alabama history, Mark Ingram.(G)

  • Lots of great choices to choose from as yall pointed out.

Greatest play I ever saw was the strip by George Teague, even though it was called back.

The goal line stand, the block, the kick, the drive and catch by Upchurch, the drive in the Bayou and Yeldon's play; all are great examples of the greatest.

Does anyone remember Kenny Stabler sloshing down a muddy Legion Field in 1967 for our only score to beat Auburn?
I was listening on the radio at work in Prattville, but the memory is still vivid. Don't worry, my boss and almost everyone else in the store, and all over Alabama, were listening too.

Looking forward to "The Great Debate" Chris!

That was Greg Richardson not Al Bell. Great play, though.

Teague's strip was symbolic of that whole game.

several good nominees in this thread...

I would think Rocky Block has to be included.

    Goal line stand- PSU

    TJ yeldon Screen Pass

    Teague in the NC

    Langham Pick 6 92

    this would be hard...

Chris- Could you do like 25 and let us Vote for the Top 10? or 20?

For now I'm going Top 10 (and there's a reason why that will become apparent at the time), but I have a feeling there might be some honorable mentions.

I actually had someone try and talk me into including Tommy Lewis' tackle. Um, no ...

  • The Dareus hit and interception return for a TD on McCoy in the 2009-2010 BCSCG in Pasadena has to be on any top ten list. It stopped them on their first drive, setting the tone for our next Championship run under Saban...

  • I would say have this list and then a 'Top 10 plays to set up these plays'. There are a few here that overshadowed big plays. It could be a 'rest of the story' type list.

  • Doesn't belong in the top 10, but Trent's run against Ark was a personal favorite of mine. Broke a bunch of tackles and went the distance....sort of introduced himself to the fanbase with that run. Also his long runs against OleMiss and the barn.

  • Colin Peek's td catch in the SEC title game doesn't get much love either. That was a huge game for Bama to get over the UF hump was a great play call and throw and catch. They were sort of the media darling at the time and we basically took their manhood. What about McElroy's tiptoe down the sideline....

Lots of huge plays in that game. It really was a program defining win IMO. Beating Tebow and trouncing the heavily favored Gators was incredible.

  • Julio's over the shoulder touchdown reception from JPW in the 2008 Georgia Blackout game was incredible even if it didn't lead to a championship that year. That game was really when we started to turn the corner under Saban. No one expected us to beat Georgia like that or even beat them period.

  • Man... you could do a greatest plays of all time and a greatest plays of the Saban era. Been plenty in the last 5 years to fill out any list.
