  • Fun fact: Jen Fenton is batting .769 so far in the NCAA tournament. She's 10-13. She's been big for us all season and is playing her best softball right now.

  • Do you guys feel like we have a realistic chance of winning it all? I haven't watched any other teams besides our team but we look pretty solid.

The one team I see that would pose a really big challenge would be Cal. i think we could take any other team out there. But even they had to squeak out of regionals.

  • Keeping Traina fresh is going to be a big key. If Locke can rest her just one or two games then she should have fresh legs the entire tournament. There are a few pitchers out there with better stuff but I think she has the most mental toughness and throws the smartest game. I think the difference this year for Alabama is that we have much better hitting to go along with the strong pitching.

YES. We have maybe the best chance we have ever had. For a few reasons.

    1. There is not really that one dominant team this year. A team like we have seen in years past. There are several very good ones, but not a dominant. The best arguably are of course the top seeds Cal, BAMA, ASU (who may not make it out of this weekend....LLaff is the real deal and I said this before the seeding...I DID NOT want to face them in the Super Regionals. That is a team that can beat anyone on any given day. Period. My goodness they can hit, run - speed is endless it seems, power, and nice young pitcher to boot. That is going to be a tough team to knock out if they go ahead and knock out Arizona State.

    2. We have one of the best pitchers in the game. Jackie is a fire baller with another couple of great pitches to go with it. She throws as hard as anyone and when you get in the upper 60's and 70's in this game, it is so tough to hit. I wished we all could see what's it like standing in the batters box, with the pitcher being so close relative to baseball of course, and someone throwing heat like Jackie does.

    3. We have as well of a rounded batting lineup as any year in previous years. Speed at the top. Power in the middle, and very good hitters 6-9 with power at times as well. Danae Hayes is going to be a .400 hitter for the next few years or at least her jr. and sr, years - in the years to come. She is incredible and is relatively unknown at least nationally simple because of the other girls who have been at BAMA for years. Watch her the next few games, her stance, her presence in the box, her swing....it is so smooth and she has such confidence right now. Love watching her hit. LOL I love watching all the girls hit. Jen Fen is on FIRE. Almost unoutable (lol) yeah I know not a word.

Simply, we have the pitching, the hitting, the fielding, and best maybe - the makeup to win it all. Still, doesn't mean we will. There are two/three teams should they make it to OKC that can beat anyone on any day.

Cal, LL, and I can not count out OU with Ricketts in the circle even though I don't think they can win it all? O and BAMA We also can not count out ASU should they come back and win the next two. The winner of their series with L. Lafayette will be in contention to win it. To touch a little on La-Lafayette....they have a record of 49-4 and if in a major conference with that same record would be at a minimum the #2 seed or fighting with us for that seed, if not the #1 seed. Only CAL has 4 losses on the year. Sure, maybe they don't win that many in a major conference? The point, they are seeded 14th - but IMHO no way are a #14 team. They are top 5 again IMHO easily.

  • BB I think you hit on one of the biggest reasons I think we have the make up to win it all. mental toughness. Nothing bothers Jackie when she's in the circle. If she gives up a home run she doesn't dwell on it. She moves on and gets the next hitter. She does not get rattled, period. These girls always believe they will win even if they are behind. They don't doubt themselves at all.

Someone brought up Amanda Locke and her pitching. She has been a very pleasant surprise this year. I believe she has finally gotten to the point where she can give us at least 5 innings if we need her to do so. She has a really good curve and drop ball while throwing in about the mid 60s I think. She's a different look than Jackie because she uses more movement than power.

Our hitters are seeing the ball really well right now. Michigan's coach called Jen Fenton the toughest out in softball right now and I agree with her. Jen is probably the most underrated player in country. She's batting .769 for the tournament and plays a great center field. She's also stolen a ton of bases. She and Braud get on and Kaila Hunt with her 19 hr and 72 rbi come up next to knock them in. Oh and we have Hunt for two more years.

Cal with their pitching depth has to be the favorite, but they are mortal, just ask Arkansas. I think we have a very good shot to win it all. Sorry for the long post.

Good info. And your right. This is imho as well our best chance to win it all - at least since I have really followed the game. We are more well rounded than any team I see. Some are great at pitching. Some at hitting. Some field nicely. Some are vets and some are freshman. But I don't think one team has ALL that we bring.

Too bad paper doesn't win it for you. When your talking about a game, a tourney where one loss puts you at a disadvantage early - anything can happen. Same if you win those first two games. That is so huge but as we saw last year still is no guarantee. No matter, I would still rather win the first two and take our chances especially this year. O and for the long post, lol no problem. I post WAY TOO LONG way too often fingergun

Can't wait for this afternoon and maybe the chance to finish this one off.

  • Amanda is really pressing right now. Everything she hits is right off her thumbs or off the end of her bat. I think she'll settle down and get back to hitting the way we are accustomed to seeing her hit. Watch her swings today. She starts really low in her stance and when she stays low she hits the ball really well. When she stands up in her swing she doesn't hit well. Those are Murph's words not mine, but looking at tape it seems to be pretty accurate.
