  • I'm preparing my anus for this comment;
    It's badass for a training facility, especially the equipment, but for the budget they had think the design could have been a bit better. They really had to hammer it out in a short period of time which is impressive. I won't get into the nerd talk too much.

    And yes, I would be happy to offer pro-bono services as an Architect, Developer, etc. in the future for UA.

    I assume from your post that you are a professional Architect, Developer, etc. and so I am curious (genuine, not snark), what changes would you have made to the design and for what underlying reason? I like the current layout but would like to hear your thoughts.

    Yep. If the construction budget is accurrate, cost per SF is equivalent to some Healthcare Facilities. The exterior Facades probably cost a bit more than a normal building for aesthetics to match the campus. Spatially, I think a few more thought could have been given to the amenities like nutrition, juicebars, etc. Also, vertical access/egress to L2. Also, think they could have added SF to the upper floors but kept it open. Then it's just nerdy detail stuff like coordinating dimensions of the equipment and detailing of the garage doors from a maintenance and aesthetic standpoint. One example is how the TVs overhang the perimeter columns covering windows. Flooring could have been detailed or
    installed better with what's out there and in budget. It's awesome, don't get me wrong but my love for UA demands perfection.

    Interesting. Could you design us a new baseball stadium?

    Yep. Would love to. Only have helped design on two stadium jobs but would give it my best shot.

    You obviously know what you're talking about here. These are things I wouldn't have picked up on, but can see pretty clearly with a little thought. In the past, I have been involved with projects at UA, and it is my honest opinion that the bid process, though required by law since it's a tax funded institution, often kills the ability to customize. I'm not criticizing the architect on this project, mind you, but think that they could have been hamstrung by the necessity to provide "at least 2 approved equals". It drives me nuts...if products B and C were exactly equal to A, then they'd all either need to call themselves A or sue the sh^& out of each other.

    Funny we're discussing this, because the facility is amazing. Your point is well taken by me though.

    That definitely seems the case about the process. Dealt with it before at University of Houston. Very short turnaround at the same time I expect the Architects to grind out the late hours on a cool project. I do appreciate the Facility though.

    i was thinking the same thing. It is too open and too noisy. Hell, did you hear that video when the blenders started up? You can't hear yourself think in there. who had the idea to have the "nutrition" station to be open into the main weight room? It's essentially a 2 floor aircraft hanger with large garage doors on both sides.

    I like it overall, it is certainly impressive and I'm not complaining, but just think a little more thought and consideration to sound design and general "feng shui" would've gone a LONG way...

    Being that we did the flooring, and donated a large portion of it, I take offense to your comments about the floors.
