19 tight ends get Combine invites, but no Michael Williams?...

  • He isn't the hybrid WR/TE the league loves these days, but 19 other tight ends were more worthy of an invite than a 6-foot-6, 270-pound, three -year starter for a college offense that is more NFL in style than any out there?

    Joke.

  • TR, how many TEs were at the Senior Bowl?

  • What a joke.

  • Whats even more astonishing is that this comes on the heels of what we saw him do in the Senior Bowl. I thought he showed in that game that hes more of a receiving threat than most believe, and we all know what kind of blocker he is.

  • Bama Brad

  • It is a joke and just shows you unfortunately where that position has evolved to (for most teams) in the league. Hope he can find a home or maybe find a way to evolve into a tackle. I believe he'd be great in sets where you see two tights and overloads, unfortunately there aren't many teams that you see using them.

  • He will be busting his ass to be ready for Bama's Pro Day.

This will be his best chance to show out, then hopefully get a workout for teams before the draft.

Yep. Again, guys like Reed of UF and Rivera of UT are more along the lines of what the league likes right now. And there are probably four or five others that I get. But 19 and no invite?

Could not agree more with it being a joke. We had this discussion in Walsh's combine thread and it is truly baffling. Even taking my crimson colored glasses off, I can not imagine there being a better blocking TE in the draft. On top of that, Williams has proven to have good hands when given the chance. I really hope this does not effect his draft stock too much.

    ugatider

  • It really is absurd. Travis McCall was great at blocking for us, but I can see why he would not get an invite. Williams 100% deserved to be there. It makes more sense if they just forgot him on accident, rather than saying he does not belong.

Wow, The Nevada TE getting snubned as well. I thought I had heard that he was rising up draft boards and a possible mid round guy. I belive he was the one they were talking up during Senior Bowl.

Completely agree. Really surprised me to see that he had not been invited.

  • FYI: Alabama's Pro Day is scheduled for March 13. Also, Brad Smelley was snubbed by the Combine a year ago and still ended up going to the Browns in the seventh round.

  • What is it with our TEs getting snubbed by the Combine? I seem to remember Colin Peek not getting an invite either.

Smelley got some play on the active roster by the end of the year. I don't think Peek actually ever made a roster though.

All that being said, Williams is by far our best pro prospect at that position during the Saban era IMO.

    ugatider

  • It's a ploy by OzzieN and it's brilliant. He'll draft Michael Williams and get a steal.

    Bamaducks

  • idiots...michael williams will be in the nfl for a long time. coach saban has the connections to get him a shot and i think that's all he will need.

He does, but this part of his comment is obviously what's hurting him: "will struggle to separate at the next level". Obviously, speed/agility is the main question mark for him. I seriously doubt this to be the case, but given our players' histories of using the Pro Day to run the 40, maybe they just decided to extend an invite elsewhere?

  • um wow that really makes me mad. For those Titans fans out there, Michael Williams will be everybit the blocker that Craig Stevens is. And Stevens will amass a >10 yr career before its all said and done do to his blocking and occasional 3rd down catch over the middle.

There may have been an influx of tight end talent, but, to me, at least, it's hard to imagine 19 guys with more next level potential than Williams. And that's all the NFL cares about when issuing invites.

There's no doubt that his speed and overall athleticism are in question. I get that. Funny thing is, watching him as a high school senior five years ago, I wondered if he would be able to handle the blocking. Haha! And people forget that he started out at UA at jack, which isn't a place for those with limited athleticism. He's not Vernon Davis by any means. But he's not an extra offensive tackle either.
