I remember that game as well. I was a senior in high school and was on a recruiting visit to Livingston University when they announced the score there in Livingston; everybody was shocked. The loss to Notre Dame is one that I remember as well. We had just lost a state playoff game the night before and I didn't know it, but that was my last football game ever. It was a really sad weekend.
What I remember about the last few years of Coach Bryant's career was the quarterback position. A starter didn't clearly rise to the top and they had a hard time settling on a QB. In '80 it was Jacobs, but he really didn't distance himself from the others. Coach Bryant would always play mulitiples at that position, but most of the time it was clear who the confidence was in. In '81-'82 it was Walter Lewis, Ken Coley, Alan Gray and maybe one more but it was a position that was not solidly locked down. All of these were good, excellent athletes, (Coley was lightning fast), but it wasn't clear who the starter was from week to week if I remember correctly.
Biggest miss of that era was not having Tommy Wilcox as the quarteback.
