1983 Alabama All-Star game

  • I had the privilege to coach at Vigor HS from 1978 -1986 and one of my most memorable moments was 1983 All-Star game in Tuscaloosa. Our head coach (Harold Clark) was chosen as one of the coaches for the game so the rest of the Vigor coaching staff was able to attend practices and get a birds-eye view of the game. That year we had three players selected to play; Beauford Perkins (AU) – a 6’6” 270 lb tackle…very quick for his size....Lydell Mitchell (UA)–safety/WR…to this day still one of the best “athletes” I’ve ever coached….and Tommy Compton, who was "Mr. Football" that year, great passer and a tremendous athlete. Also playing in that game was a certain running back from Ensley named Cornelius Bennett who had rushed for over 1,ooo yds. At that time he was 6”2 and about 235 lbs. He started the game at running back but about mid-way through the first half they put him in at linebacker and from that point on he stole the show. His quickness from side to side and explosive power into the tackle was exceptional and his motor never quit. There was a lot more buzz about him at LB rather than RB after that game.

I bring this up because I’ve seen a lot of posts about who Ruben Foster reminds people of. Looking at RF’s highlight video’s he reminds me a lot of Bennett with his physical attributes (almost identical), his running style as a running back (very physical), and his motor and the way he explodes to the ball on a tackle.

So here’s to hoping that RF continues to develop as a player and reaches his full potential as CB did both on and off the field. If so, we all know he’ll be a very special player for years to come.

Sorry for for the long post but thought it might bring back some memories for a few “old timers” on a slow day.

    Roll Tide!!

  • Thanks for the info. I always thought Biscuit was taller than that. If Foster is half the player Bennett was then we got a good one.

I've had season tix for 30 years, Bennett & Thomas are hands down the best I've seen. They both could dominate a game. I would love to see a talent like that on a Nick Saban D.

  • I had two friends that played in that game. Greg Butler from Sulligent and Wayne Williams from Erwin. Both played at Livingston.
