3 things that continue to come up about bball that baffles me

  • 1) lack of offensive identity: It's a weave cut offense that creates openings in the lane or open treys. Unless a team is playing a zone, I know bama will run the weave cut offense... Zone, don't have anyone to consistently attack from the middle or low post.

    2) CAG does not recruit juco big men... Oh,, Moussa is juco big man... please name me 2 juco big men that are contributing on a high level this or last year. Pierre Jackson is the only guard I can think of. Transfers are the new thing and I never read were any of these transfer were willing to sit out a year to play at Bama. The only juco big man that has been productive the past couple of years is Ricardo Ratliffe,,, and If I recall correctly, Ratliffe pick Missouri over Arkansas and Bama..

    3) Why hasn't Obasohan played more?... The kid was lost in December. I remember reading on this board that Grant should not play Obasohan until he is ready to play D1 basketball.

Don't come in here talking all this common sense. Dont you know Grant has dreamed up an offense that keeps us from scoring?

I also agree on Lacey. He is very limited on the floor. He gets lost if not handling the ball. I could easily see Rele stating at 1 next year with Retin at the 2. with some guys improving in the off season and if one of the incoming guys are ready, you could see None of the big 4 recruiting class starting next year.

All great points. Here's my thoughts:

#1). Alabama is going to struggle offensively because they have next to zero low post threat. They can't get any "inside-out" game going which makes it hard to get good spacing and more open looks. I am somewhat surprised they don't try more penetrate and pitch. Alabama is not a great perimeter shooting team, but they're "ok." IMO, one of the worst screen and cutting team I've ever seen. It may have something to do with the personnel makeup -- not enough bigs and athletic wings.

#2). Good point, there's just not that many bigs that can score coming out of high school these days. Death of the low post game, so go get some strong 6-8, athletic types that can rebound, defend and run the floor.

#3). What the heck are we missing here. I 1000% agree with you. The kid brings a lot to the table that this team needs.

  • We suck at screening and it's not just our big guys' fault. They set some pretty bad screens sometimes, but our guards suck at setting up the screener and they basically jog off the screen and catch the ball running away from our basket at all times. Never curl and never come off a screen hard and shoot a jumper. IMO, it's not really an issue with the offense that we run, it's more of the mindset that we run it in. If the best look comes at :32 on the shot clock...shoot it. If it comes with :02 on the shot clock....shoot it. It's really amazing how different a "shooter" can look when he's just reading and reacting as opposed to thinking.

  • If he continues his improvement Obasohan might have more pro-potential than anyone in the program.

    Wow, downvoted for this?

I am not putting down Lacey, he is what he is. That is a good SG that needs to get better at setting himself off screens to get his shot and work on getting separation to get shots off.

I could easily see a starting five of Engstrom, Hale, Pollard, Retin and Releford.

That is if Hale is ready and Pollard/ Retin improve. That would give us scorers and athletic ability at all spots but the 5 and he is serviceable. I think jacobs and Lacey would be in the mix with one heck of a bench and the heat could be turned up.

I am not saying Cooper, Randolph, Lacey and Jacobs are bad, just that the competition for playing time should be much better next year.

Wish we could find a late diamond in the rough PG for this class.

If you keep bringing up the truth and confronting ignorance with facts, you are going to be called a "homer". On the other hand, you might get lambasted with statistics that show we are regressing and in need of a coaching change. headslap

  • My biggest problem with Coach Grant is the absolute lack of using timeouts and sometimes his substitution patterns. It is obvious that this team does not handle other team's runs very well. We have continuously lost leads this year and not called a timeout to try and stop momentum or set up something on offense. Even in some of the games we have won we have given up good size leads only to end the game with 3 timeouts left.

He did try to work the officials a little more on Sat. which I was glad to see. I don't think it helped but he will definitely need to do more of that with our physical style of play.

Sadly, it is rare that we get up a good shot after a timeout, Grant's set plays have lacked a lot this year. Now one can blame that on not having an inside game to create a play around, not having anyone on the court that requires a double team on our team, or the weak way that we set and use screens most of the time. But regardless, our offensive production out of a timeout has been pretty poor this year.

    Good post.

Imagine Jacobs having to guard Hale in practice. He can't be getting much work defensively if he's guarding Moussa in practice. Competition will be a luxury we should have next year.

Personally I like rotations of Rele, Lacey and Obasohan at the 1-2. Levi, Coop at the 2-3. Pollard and Hale at the 3-4. Jacobs at the 4. Taylor at the 4-5, and Carl and Moussa at the 5. I don't know who will start but Taylor has a chance. He'll have to continue building strength but he offers more than both of our 7 footers right now.

I'm starting to believe that Lacey thinks too much like a pg. He's a plus passer but sometimes he's unselfish to a fault.

Please stop it...you are on overkill. Everyone know's that you don't care or want CAG to be the coach. A lot of objective people can fairly assess your motives and basketball acumen. You don't have to continually harp, bitch and moan because, NO MATTER how much you and others complain about CAG, you are NOT creating a maelstrom that even hints at CAG being on the proverbial "coaching hot seat."

It's time to summon the power of positive thoughts, attitudes and energy into the presence of Alabama basketball and BOL...pray

I agree with your point about competition. From the looks of things, there CANNOT be much competing in practice. Next year, there appears to be a punchers chance there will be some real competing among the players for playing time.

okie dokie booms, not like I have been saying things that have been untrue or anything. Heck, I'm one of the few anti-Grant posters that has been willing to admit that I expect us to be good next year which means Grant will get at minimum a 6th year.

And it's not like you have been over the top with some of your reasons why Grant has been doing a great job or anything (sarcasm implied). It's not like you said in a thread that Grant had Chicken Sh*t to work with when he got here, and when I said compare the rosters from year 1 to this year, your response changed from Grant having Chicken Sh*t when he got here to Grant just being given players that didn't fit his system. Nothing over the top there at all.

BTW, if I really thought Grant was willing to change, adapt, and improve as a coach instead of Grant thinking he was doing everything correctly and nothing needed to change I would still be on the Grant bandwagon. In Grant's world he does everything right. It's just injuries, players not buying in, or just plain bad luck he has not been as successful as he could have been here so far. Hard to be positive until a coach realizes his weaknesses and tries to improve them, until Grant does that we are going to get the same things year in and year out from him.

I'll make a deal with you, if all our players actually at the minimum show up in shape next year for the start of the season, I will cut off the negative chatter on Grant in November and December and give Grant till January to use the entire OOC schedule next year to show improvement. I will even give a pass on Engstrom since he is coming off of knee surgery.

The Chicken sh** and talent not being the type for his system were not mutually exclusive. When Coach Saban arrived, he needed to recruit players for his system and that were an upgrade in talent, character and skills. In football, you have 25 scholarships/chances and therefore, there is more room for error. In basketball, you have 1-5 scholarships per season. Therefore, there is an EXPONENTIAL chance for a recruiting failure to significantly impact your team, season and program.

You don't know if CAG is unwilling to change or hasn't seen a need to change because of the circumstances and reasons attributing to the team's /program's problems. I am at a loss for words, when people start assuming what's someone's intentions are or what's inside their heads. You don't know what CAG is thinking.

I expect that CAG will do everything within his power to insure that next season stands the greatest chance for success.

does that include firing some of his asst. coaches and getting in some that can either help Grant evaluate bigs, help take some of the load of recruiting off of Grant, or can bring a better offensive approach? Just checking cause I keep hearing from a lot of Grant supporters that is all Grant needs to do, which to a degree I agree with, I just don't think Grant will ever do it.
