3 things that continue to come up about bball that baffles me

  • Lucky said...

All great points. Here's my thoughts:

#1). Alabama is going to struggle offensively because they have next to zero low post threat. They can't get any "inside-out" game going which makes it hard to get good spacing and more open looks. I am somewhat surprised they don't try more penetrate and pitch. Alabama is not a great perimeter shooting team, but they're "ok." IMO, one of the worst screen and cutting team I've ever seen. It may have something to do with the personnel makeup -- not enough bigs and athletic wings.

#2). Good point, there's just not that many bigs that can score coming out of high school these days. Death of the low post game, so go get some strong 6-8, athletic types that can rebound, defend and run the floor.

#3). What the heck are we missing here. I 1000% agree with you. The kid brings a lot to the table that this team needs.

Thanks for the analysis Lucky. It's nice to have a staff member break down the main concerns on this board. Although the DoomsDay Preppers will never be happy with Grant.

does that include firing some of his asst. coaches and getting in some that can either help Grant evaluate bigs, help take some of the load of recruiting off of Grant, or can bring a better offensive approach? Just checking cause I keep hearing from a lot of Grant supporters that is all Grant needs to do, which to a degree I agree with, I just don't think Grant will ever do it.

good post; something has to change, maybe even several "somethings"; we can't continue to do the same things and expect significantly improved results. Ask a simple question: What would Nick do?

    1) lack of offensive identity: It's a weave cut offense that creates openings in the lane or open treys. Unless a team is playing a zone, I know bama will run the weave cut offense... Zone, don't have anyone to consistently attack from the middle or low post.

    2) CAG does not recruit juco big men... Oh,, Moussa is juco big man... please name me 2 juco big men that are contributing on a high level this or last year. Pierre Jackson is the only guard I can think of. Transfers are the new thing and I never read were any of these transfer were willing to sit out a year to play at Bama. The only juco big man that has been productive the past couple of years is Ricardo Ratliffe,,, and If I recall correctly, Ratliffe pick Missouri over Arkansas and Bama..

    3) Why hasn't Obasohan played more?... The kid was lost in December. I remember reading on this board that Grant should not play Obasohan until he is ready to play D1 basketball.

This is a great post. There is nothing wrong with the offensive sets we run. It is the same as a lot of other teams. We get a lot of open looks and we would get that many more with a big man down low to demand attention.

The only big problems I see on offense are pace of play and ability to set screens. I really think Grant's philosophy right now is to win the "points per possession" battle. Where I think this was the right way to play for the last 2 teams we have had, this team would do much better to increase the number of possessions per game because we are so guard oriented. We play so much better offensively when we push the ball and take the first open look early in the shot clock.

Also, our kids don't know how to set screens. Watch Ole Miss and Florida set screens. They know how to move right at the last second and they set an effective screen without getting called for a foul. Our guys are poorly coached in setting screens.

I love coach Grant. Definitely think he is the right man. If he can turn up his recruiting he is going to have big time success at Alabama. Just need to tweak a few things.

No disrespect,,, But your question is an example of the mode of thinking that keeps Bama basketball fan base from "appearing" to have a really smart basketball fan base..

But I am sure Duke fans are asking the same question "what would Coach K do", when they are discussing Cutcliffe.

I can see that... good points.. and great point about the last 2 teams

I am a little shaky about the pace,,,I am not confident that speeding up the game will help, with Bama's shooters,,, almost lost to Mississippi State, when the offensive sets were sped up.

I'm a UNC grad, not Duke. In any event good coaching, management and leadership skills are not necessarily the exclusive property of any particular sport.

Great points. Let me ask you a question. Some of my friends work closely with high school athletics. They have had an opportunity to see Grant's assistants in action on the recruiting trail. I have heard that they struggle on the recruiting trail often getting outworked by rival coaches. Have you heard the same?

Retin would be much farther along in his development had he played more early in the season. You can tell that he gets too agressive at times which causes him to turn the ball over. He is still learning the game. However, the guy is an unbelievable athlete with tremendous upside. Problem for him will be what position does he play going forward. I like him at the two but he is small. He was brought here to run the point but it looks like he can't handle the ball well enough to play the position. I hope Grant can find a point guard in the late signing period or else there is some trouble on the horizon.

  • Pujol is the only coach I've hear about or seen out recruiting (besides Grant). But I haven't been around many major high D1 prospect in a few years... The feel is that Grant is the best recruiter on staff.

Yeah, but the problem is a HC doesn't have time to be the lead recruiter, the HC needs to be the closer, not the lead recruiter. If Grant is having to do that he seriously needs to fire an asst coach and get someone in that will take that load off of him.

But I don't know one way or the other, I have no idea if Grant is spending to much time recruiting and that is taking away from his other responsibilities. I just have seen many different posters claim they have knowledge that Grant's asst coaches don't do a good job recruiting.

Although it is a common problem in management for a young manager having trouble letting someone else do a job the manager is better at then the employee so that the manager has enough time to do all of the other high level responsibilites. Maybe that is a trap Grant accidentally fell into.
