A-Day crowd...

  • I admit I always suck at guessing how many jelly beans are in the jar or whatever, but it sure didn't seem like we had 78K in the house....I was kinda surprised coming off a championship and with so many folks not having CSS I looked for 90 plus. Any theories on why there weren't more people?

SORRY--didnt realize this had already been discussed--as I point out later in the thread, hadn't been on in a while.

Prepare to get roasted but I too was surprised that the turnout was not better. Not going to say I was disappointed because the crowd was still terrific by any team's measure for a Spring game, but I would have wagered we would have pushed for a full house and we weren't even close.

I was there and would agree with you on the number. I don't believe there was anywhere close to 78k.

  • For what it's worth...there were at least 70K there in my opinion but I don't know where the estimates come from. I think 78K (or about that) is a tremendous crowd.

A think for some it was a bit of the "been there...done that" factor...but the difference between this year and others was only 12K or so (15%) so I don't view the difference as that big.

And just for reference, if you want a few hundred up-votes... just post that it looked like we had at least 100,000 there for the game and it was a tremendous turnout.

Wow for a guy who accused everyone of being defensive, you seem to be the one who can't let it go. Your level of butthurt isnt proportional to the importance of this argument IMO. I'm probably just hating because I feel guilty though.

  • i'd say factor #1 for the casual fan, it was probably a little too hot. not enough unknowns about the team to check out. certainly gas prices play a big role here. you tend to get a lot of poorer people that never go to games and gas prices no doubt played a factor. our fans probably aren't quite as hungry coming off a championship. prom.

  • Id say 6o k tops . What it looked like to me.

  • Now one thing to keep in mind is most people probably sat on the west side of the stadium to keep the sun off them, so were looking directly across the field at areas that were not quite as full. The west upper deck where I was sitting was far from full, but it was considerably fuller than the east side.

  • I think the previous thread turned into a flame fest because the op came off as an aggressive douche. A simple question like this op would have had a different outcome.

Personally, I've been saving my cash for some summer vacations i have planned. That, and with french quarter festival going on here in nola, 12 hour roundtrip drive for a practice isn't gonna happen.

Don't really care. I'm still disappointed in the turn out, downvotes be damned. And again I'll point out that I was not criticizing those who live far away or had other obligations or couldn't afford it etc., but the people who live close to Tuscaloosa but chose to do something else instead - and there were plenty.

The majority of people who were there have agreed that it didn't look like 78,000+. The people defending the number and getting pissy about it are the ones who didn't bother to come because they didn't want to.

    I guess I'm an asshole.

  • I was there, in my novice opinion there was nothing close to 78k. Maybe 65k. That's what really gets to me, the gross embellishment. I was a little disappointed as well. But I understand the reasons people couldn't make it.

So...you're criticizing me because I live in Birmingham but on a beautiful Saturday decided to go to the pool and hang out with friends instead of driving an hour each way to watch a practice? I know this is going to be hard for you to understand...but there ARE other things in life besides Bama football.

I support the team, go to games, have been to A-day more than a couple times...but criticizing people for enjoying their Saturday in a different manner than driving a good distance to watch a practice is ridiculous. Some of you need to branch out just a tad....

Btw, 78k (or 70k or whatever it actually was) is a great crowd. I bet no more than 2-3 schools beat that number.
