AJC :Steve Spurrier on Recruiting and Grayshirts

  • " We had two players that had not qualified yet. We were waiting on Jadeveon Clowney [who announced more than a week after signing day]. Of course, we weren’t going to call Clowney and say ‘By the way, we’ve got a player down in central Florida. He hasn’t qualified yet and it doesn’t look like he’s going to but we have to save a spot for him. So we’re not going to recruit you anymore, Clowney.’ Now would that have made sense? Of course not. So we called the player down there who had not qualified and told him ‘We’re still going to take you. But if you qualify, you’re going to have to wait to come in January. So he didn’t qualify, as well as another player didn’t qualify. But we did have to tell them that. We picked actually two young men that were the furthest from qualifying – that’s how we handled it. Because of all of sudden, you get a top player like Jadeveon Clowney, and sometimes you have to take bad press on that. That’s what happened with Alabama. I read the story about the kid who had the knee operation or something. Alabama thought he wouldn’t be ready to play next year, so they asked him to come in January. But he didn’t want to do that, I guess. What would you do? You’ve got a great player coming, and then you’ve got a player injured or may not qualify. That’s a tough call right there.”

  • I know he can be sarcastic, but I for one, have always liked Coach Superior. He says what he feels and wears his emotions on his sleeve, but he does not worry about what others might think and does what he thinks he should do.

I'm surprised the AJC even reported his comments since they did not bash bama but was actually sympathetic to the way bama handled their recruiting.

  • CSS always tells it how it is...always! He knows as well as anyone that there is nothing wrong with what happens with "borderline recruits" albeit in injury or grades. You spend your time on the guys you know will be able to participate and compete as early as possible. Its not the coach or schools fault that the NCAA restricts so many levels of communication with recruits and their families. Why cant so many of the haters in the CF world see this is so surprising to me. We are not Harvard, Yale, or Vandy etc. You dont go there to fulfill any dreams of playing pro ball. You go there to get the highest form of education the nation has to offer. You dont come to Bama strictly to get the highest form of accredited education the nation has to offer. You come to Bama to get a really good education AND the highest form of coaching to play for great teams and championships to have the greatest opportunity to fulfill dreams of playing highest level of college football and a possible pro career.
My point is, the ones who knock us for our recruiting are forgetting what the business of college football is all about, not to mention failing to remember the FACT that we've never took away ANY scholly offer that we've offered. If they wanna complain about a 6 month delay offer in enrollment, then I will listen to them. But if they are talking about ethical problems? I cant understand that at all with an offer still on the table (just 6 months delayed). But I do understand that haters hate teams that dominate. We dominate, so I expect us to stay hated by some in the country. I love it!

"That's what people know us as..ya understand!"

  • It's funny how the media harps on kids getting "screwed over" by having to take a greyshirt, but they never acknowledge the position it puts the coaches in when these kids flip their commitments late in the process, or even on signing day.
