Call me a pessimist but I don't think we'll be bumping Spart to anything next year...he'll be getting a BIG bump from an ACC or Big12 type school to be head coach...I know we've heard it before, but I think next year it's reality...then assuming that works out for him, we give him a HUGE bump in, say, 2019...

I know I'm being naive here, but why would Smart leave Alabama making 1.1-1.5 mil per? He certainly has pressure to perform, but would it be anything like being a head coach ? I'm firmly entrenched with the thought that this man can step in to succeed Nick Saban, and I am beginning to strongly think he could do so from his current position. Why risk moving on ?

... (especially for the 2014 and 2015 seasons), I'm left to wonder what UA will bump Kirby Smart to for 2013. You know it's coming and it's not going to be a cost of living adjustment. Smart's base in 2012 was $950K. Does he move to $1.1 mill per? More? He's received $100K raises each of the least two offseasons. With bonuses, he made north of $1.1 in 2012. Perspective: In 2008, Smart had a base salary of $360K. Meteoric rise, indeed.
As for what's to come this time around, I have to think he'll get John Chavis money (LSU's defensive coordinator will make $1.1 million in base salary in 2013). At least. Combine Smart's talents as a recruiter with what he brings to the table as a coach and as Nick Saban's top lieutenant, and it would be hard to argue against UA keeping Smart atop the salary heap when it comes to college football's highest-paid defensive assistants. The only question is, by how much?

Great post Travis and excellent thoughts. I've heard rumblings that an increase was coming for Smart, but I haven't heard any numbers. The higher that number goes -- with his age and current responsibilities -- its going to take a high level job to lure him away. Also, I don't see him being a "pro guy" either. SEC or high level ACC job???

On the other hand, why would the University not offer him a bigger contract, so attractive, that it's a no-brainer for him to choose to stay put? We netted a $32-million profit last year - possibility more after this year. We have a machine that prints money, called our football program. It's worth protecting by reinvestment. I understand that Kirby is enjoying his experience at the University and is in no hurry to leave - provided we pay him more than anybody else can. And, we certainly can. We've got the wherewithal to compete with the NFL on coaches' salaries. Mal & Nick know what to do. I'm not uncovering any new ground here. (sorry about the ramble)

Agree with his next step. I've talked to people who think he might go as high as $1.5 mill. Not sure about that but if he does it might say something (without actually saying it) about a succession plan for down the road.

My only concern about bumping up one assistant so much is that it could cause issues within the staff. It's hard to pay one guy 1.5mil And another 200k and jealousy not develop. Burton burns is a good example. His market value is less than smart so he gets paid less but he is a very valuable commodity. He almost left I think to prove his worth. Everyone needs a raise if smart continues to move up.

I didn't intend to mislead you: I'm not advocating the University throw money at Kirby/assistants, because it can afford it. To my core, I'm a devout capitalist. So, the higher side of the competitive salary range would be my target. As I said earlier, Mal & Nick know what to do.

On one hand a succession plan looks good and makes public sense, but for some reason my gut says its a no go at Alabama. First, they really don't have much teeth. If a high level job -- and that is what we are talking about -- comes around and Saban hasn't already announced he's retiring, Smart will leave and take the job, as long as it meets his three standards (1. Control 2. Location 3. Money). Also to consider, Saban is "the man" at Alabama. He is "the show" as some have called him. I don't think he is the succession plan type of coach if you know what I mean. That's not a bad thing, its just the way it is. I don't think there will be a public notification or title, but the succession plan will be done privately in the form of Benjamins.
