It appears we're headed that way, Rusty. Smart has seen his salary jump by about 200 percent since 2008, so why not?

On one hand a succession plan looks good and makes public sense, but for some reason my gut says its a no go at Alabama. First, they really don't have much teeth. If a high level job -- and that is what we are talking about -- comes around and Saban hasn't already announced he's retiring, Smart will leave and take the job, as long as it meets his three standards (1. Control 2. Location 3. Money). Also to consider, Saban is "the man" at Alabama. He is "the show" as some have called him. I don't think he is the succession plan type of coach if you know what I mean. That's not a bad thing, its just the way it is. I don't think there will be a public notification or title, but the succession plan will be done privately in the form of Benjamins.

Oh, I don't think it would be something UA/Saban would make public (like Mack did with Muschamp). Hence, the inclusion of
"(without actually saying it)" in my comments. As for what kind of job Smart would be willing to take, it's looking like a very small pool of jobs. Probably have to be something along the lines of what Muschamp left Texas for. When/if he leaves, it'll be for a place where he knows he can attract elite talent and win. He's got the luxury of sitting tight until a slamdunk gig opens up.

1.2 base with SEC championship and BCS title incentives and 1.5 w/ incentives in year 2 -- two year deal if I was AD. No need for a crazy increase this year -- you already have him. Add the jump in year 2, give him something to think about when the pretty girls come calling next December/early January.

That's what I'm thinking. Keep him at the top of the DCs base-wise and go from there.

Great post Travis and excellent thoughts. I've heard rumblings that an increase was coming for Smart and the other assistants as well, but I haven't heard any numbers. The higher that number goes -- with his age and current responsibilities -- its going to take a high level job to lure him away. Also, I don't see him being a "pro guy" either. SEC or high level ACC job???

I personally believe that we're already down to the elite jobs of the college football world & would be hard pressed to see him leave for any non-SEC job that isn't either Texas, OU, FSU or USC.

Obviously an Ohio State or Michigan would typically make that list, as well, but I just have a difficult time envisioning a high level coach, who's been brought up learning all about the importance of recruiting, taking either of those jobs.

And with more and more revenue streams coming in the next few years, there will be even more of it. One area I'm actually concerned about: ticket sales. Technology and ever-expanding TV coverage is keeping more fans at the house. Of course, the networks are forking over so much cash for broadcast rights, it may not even matter.

    TR

Totally agree Travis. Ticket sales are 100 per going to be a problem (i believe even at schools like Alabama). Amazing technology and decline in discretionary spending is going to put a hurtin' soon. The NFL model of controlling supply and demand for decades is brilliant. Turn seats into suites and stop adding seats... Haha. Stadium expansion is going to bite ADs soon.

Yep. Overbuilt stadiums and wait until the playoff starts. How many fans are going to be able to afford season tickets/travel and then pull off the SEC title game, national semi and national final in succession? It's the ticket bubble.

if they don't play the semi's at a home stadium (and even if they do) they will be very poorly attended IMO...only those with corporate perks (giveaways), locals picking up cheap tickets would attend. I can't see forking out the coin for one ever, regardless of location...game is meaningless in the grand scheme of things.

True, but as you alluded to, if one guy is getting interviewed for head jobs at SEC schools and his defense is the best in college football, his market value is likely to be a good bit different than that of a position coach. Chavis is going to be at $1.1 next season. I can't see Smart being under that. That said, Burns deserves to be the highest paid coach at his position. About that there is no debate.

    TR

def agree with both points. BB is one of the most underrated coaches in America, IMHO...let's get him on a lifetime plan...

They will probably resemble an ACC or Big10 championship game - I really am surprised they went that route, when it seems they could have allowed sponsors to just bid for those games and let them be played on-campus. It can/could still be the Nokia or Discover Semi-Final @ Bryant-Denny Stadium.

Agree with his next step. I've talked to people who think he might go as high as $1.5 mill. Not sure about that but if he does it might say something (without actually saying it) about a succession plan for down the road.

    TR

This is what I'm hoping for.

The rate at which this appear to be going you are looking at UGA, UF, LSU, A&M in the SEC...VT, FSU, maybe UNC in the ACC and I think the list shrinks every year. I also think he might be in play at Texas after Mack if they don't get the household name they think they can...I shudder at the thought of what the man could do at Texas given the fertile recruiting ground in that state and their facilities and income.

I was just gonna ask this question: Do you think USCe or Clempson are possibilities?

Not to mention I don't think they could go public with it.

If you recall when the HC-in waiting thing was the cool think to do at Texas, FSU, UK and Maryland (wow did they screw that one up with ditching Friegen, refusing to hire Franklin and instead got Mr. Popular Edsell) the NCAA brought out new rules with HCIW. They said something along the line that whatever recruiting rules that were in place for the head coach would now apply to the HCIW. So any school would be foolish to name a HCIW because of those recruiting restrictions.

So if Mal did think Smart should be the guy to lead us post Saban, then it would be wink-wink behind closed doors indication. Nothing formal, nothing public and nothing put into stone.

personally, I don't believe so...USCe facilities are not up to par, IMO, with the elite SEC schools (unless you are talking baseball), and there is nothing appealing about Columbia, SC unless you are an iguana that loves heat and humidity. Clemson I suppose might be a possibility, but, again IMO, CU is cheap, and I don't believe they would give the kind of control to him he will demand...I also believe recruiting at both these schools would be tough in that, #1 they compete against one another in a small state with talent that is not consistently deep year in and year out, #2 the next best place close to them is GA and it's tough to pull talent from there with UGA and Bama virtually owning the top talent there.

Cameron got a three-year deal worth $3.4 million. He will make $600K in 2013, $1.3 million in 2014 and $1.5 million in 2015. As far as DCs go, it's a two-horse race right now between Chavis and Smart with UGA's Grantham next.

    TR

All while Grantham is an underachiever. Lol at Georgia

  • I would like to retain Kirby and then hand him the keys when Saban leaves. There's no sense in letting him run a program elsewhere. He's got Sabans philosophy and phone number. He'll do great here.
