Andre Smith Contract Update - 9 million a year

  • Profootballtalk.com passes along "word" that free agent RT Andre Smith is seeking $9 million a year.

It'd be top-shelf left tackle money -- for a right tackle -- and a significant leap up from the contract signed late last week by Giants LT William Beatty, which averages $7.5 million annually. Smith recently turned 26 and was arguably the best right tackle in football last season. We tend to doubt Smith will get $9 million a year, but all bets are off if he reaches the open market.

The Bengals have applied the franchise tag to defensive end Michael Johnson.  Which means that right tackle Andre Smith will be headed to unrestricted free agency, absent a new deal.  Soon.

  • Who is Andre's agent? If it is still the hack job he hired straight out of Bama he needs to move on. Seeking 9 mil and getting 9 mil is a whole different story. I have serious doubts he gets it in Cincy, which may be the best thing for him.

  • I don't know if he gets it, but he doesn't deserve it. Being the best RT in the NFL doesn't mean you deserve the top dollar LT money.

If he reaches free agency, he might get close, teams love overpaying for players as we've seen the last few days.

If he gets it he deserves it. He may not be worth it, but he sure as hell deserves whatever he can get.

Good for Andre. Maybe the Bengals believe he is developing into the best RT in league.I know this is not your point, but I would just soon see a Bama guy get the monies as anyone else.

  • I think he will get close to it. I hope he does not peace out after the payday.

I saw one mock draft that had Cincy opting not to resign him and then drafting big Fluke to replace him

  • I was just reading how jake long is probably going to be a right tackle on his next team.

    Could that hamper Andre value?

    Doubt it!

Jake Long is step below Dre in terms of performance last two years!

Long has been good with the Dolphins but no team would let their franchise left tackle got to free agency unless something is wrong. He was the #1 overall player taken in the 2008 NFL draft ahead of Matt Ryan. He was definitely one of those workout warriors at the combine.

Long is one of three offensive lineman taken #1 overall, Orlando Pace and Hall of Famer Ron Yeary.
Pace will be in the Hall of Fame soon.

You meant HOFamer Ron Yary from the Vikings, yes?

Got some bad news on Long, but helps out Smith:

According to Profootballtalk.com, there is "little or no chatter in league circles" about any team making a major push for free agent LT Jake Long.
"Some" NFL teams reportedly believe Long needs to play right tackle instead of left, which would severely diminish his market value. Long is also coming off back-to-back disappointing seasons. Our gut feeling all along has been that Long will wind up re-signing with the Dolphins on a deal worth significantly less than he's seeking. His current asking price is a laughable $11 million a year.

  • Jake long has sucked the last 2 years. Not sure what's up. It just hasn't been good.

If you watched any cincy games this year big andre has been what was expected - pretty dominating and making it look easy. While I bet AS gets paid his contract will be full of performance/weight hits to ensure he behaves. If I was a GM I would try to get him. He's 24 (if I remember correctly) so I'd try to sign him for 6-7 years.

  • Who is Andre Smith? Oh yea, he's that player that destroyed the chemistry of the OL when he was kicked off the team and sent home from the Bowl Game due to him and his relatives hooking up with an agent. It wouldn't surprise me if all the money he has made has been sucked out of his possession by his uncle.

  • wow..had no idea long was playing tha tbadly...i thought he was a top 5 left tackle...also did not know 9 mil was elite money for a right tackle....i knew they didnt make manning money, but i figured 15 mil or so

He has had injury issues but he has just been bad when playing....

$9 million I think would be the highest paid RT in history. Only a handful of LT in the league touch that number.

He didn't destroy the chemistry, they just werent nearly as good without him. He made the whole team twice as good.

He allowed us to run on every single play and get positive yards.
He helped keep our young and thin defense off the field. For example, bama held the ball 2/3 of the game againdt uga and clemson.
