Another outstanding turnout for A-day!

  • For all those bitching and moaning because we didn't have 90,000+ for A-day this year are just spoiled brats. It is easily 70,000 there today and that will lead the nation again in spring attendance. Get over yourselves, jeez! 70,000 for a spring game is still unbelievable. I know over 100 other D1 schools who would kill to have half that. And yes it is at least 70K because the lower bowl holds 60,000 and it is basically full, the west deck was 70% full the east deck was about 20% full with a scattering in both end zone upper decks. It's a beautful spring day with lots to do with families, kids ball games, beach, golf, fishing, school events, proms, etc.., and we still have more folks at a scrimmage than most programs have for a regular season home game. The thing that ticks me off the most is that I knew people would complain of "only" having 70,000 people there.

I complain about only having 70K because we've set a new standard and it's something we've been able to hang our hats on since 2007.

In 2004, 8 wins would have been awesome. Coach Saban has set a new standard, and 8 wins - even though it's more wins than the majority of teams will have - would absolutely be disappointing this year. Same concept. There's a new standard and we should uphold it.

The fact that we still draw over 70,000 people for a spring game 6 years after that first spring under Saban is as impressive or more than the 92K that we drew in 2007.

If people came just to support the team and because they didn't have anything better to do on a spring day, then 30-40K would show up now like they did pre-Saban and the way most other programs still do. However, the reason we still get that extra 30-50K on top of that is because we DID set a standard and most people (including me) come just to be a part of that legacy that we created. Let's face it, A-day games are boring and there's no suspense about who's going to win (because who cares). The fact that we've drawn over 70,000 people for our spring game for 6 years in a row now is impressive and something to be proud of. JMO.

It is not a gross overestimate. Definitely 70-75,000, if the number was embellished it wasn't by much.

Let's pretend that the lower bowl was at max capacity. That's 62,000. The west upperdeck might have been 70% capacity. Add another 8,000 for a maximum of 70,000. If there were another 8,000 in the rest of the upper decks, I'm Elvis.

Now, that being said - the lower bowl was easily a few thousand short of being full. There is just no logical way to conclude that we had 78K there. I know that's not what you folks want to hear, but it looked a whole lot closer to 70K than 80K.

And I know the actual number really isn't all that important. Just trying to prove a point.

ETA: Just read that Eli Gold estimated that there were about 50,000 people there. Eli wears glasses, but he isn't blind.

It's splitting hairs I know but they rightfully take into account the several thousand people that you don't see sitting in seats at any one time because there are always a few thousand people out of sight at the concession stands, bathrooms, etc.. These guys that do the estimating know what they're doing. As you said it's not that important but I think you need to realize there's more fans in the stadium than you see in the seats.
