Another possible backlash about the JT DP thing is..

  • That these kids came from big time recruiting pipelines. Washington High School in Atlanta,GA and Vigor HS in the Mobile,AL area. Pretty notable places and areas that just ooze D1A talent year in and year out. Hopefully it wont hurt us down the road, I dont think it will because I think the days of "greyshirting" are virtually over with unless the kid truly doesnt care about waiting 6 months OR they come from well to do families that can afford to do so. Love this class! Love Cooper too, I think he's gonna be a super player.

  • Saban explained the Grey shirt thing pretty well yesterday and I am in total agreement. With the restrictions on scholarships thing like this happen and you have a kid who wanted to go to Bama, which he still could have anyway, heading to Ark instead. If there was not the 25 limit then DP would be at bama with no grey shirt. Also after listening to Saban's pressure i am 100% certain he does what they feel is best for the kid with the limitations they have. This situation looks like we took the scholarship away from him, but that simply in NOT true. The scholarship reductions are there to kinda level the playing field instead of looking at where kids want to go. Why should a kid who is a good player and wants to attend Bama, and loves everything about Bama be forced to look else where because the NCAA says we can only sign 25. How does that have the best interest of the student athlete?

Once again they still had offers on the table it is not like we said oh well. I kind of think of it like this. Say you told your son you would get them an Xbox for Xmas and you went to the store and they were out but ordered you one that would be in after Xmas so he would have to wait. So on Xmas day you put the receipt in a box. Sure he might be disappointed but certain circumstances kept you from getting him one to open on Xmas. He is still getting one just not that day.

Was koren kirvin or DT over philon worth this media backlash though? Gomma be funny if philon turns out to be an all sec or AA.
I knew we accepted to many early commits from 3 stars.

Not saying that I disagree with you one bit on this.. but more playing devil's advocate. In that scenario, although you as the father know it is okay... how does your son feel. I realized you said he would be disappointed, but that is how we think he should feel, but we also think he should get over it. Most of the times kids don't just feel disappointed and get over it and realize "oh I'm not getting it today but I will get it eventually." As I am sure you are more than aware, no sarcasm at all, kids want everything right now these days. So I figure JT, and especially DP did feel crushed and honestly mislead.... But just as what I have just said is a sign of the times, so is the actual happening itself. We have pushed back to the forefront of college football and these things will happen from time to time.. and as long as we keep winning a national championship every other year, I am fine with it happening.

  • Do you also know if the coaching staff considers those rankings to be accurate? Maybe they have some of those three ztars rated higher.

  • So much for posting in the official thread on this subject.

Look, it is tough. It happened. It's over. These young men wanted to attend next fall. They had other good options where they could attend next fall, and they took those options. Maybe to an 18 year old, six months seems like a long time. From a 62 year old, believe me, it is not long at all. They could have enrolled on their own for a semester. They could have taken some junior college coaches in preparation for entering six months later, worked and saved some money while rehabbing their injury. I have waited on many things in my life that I could not have as soon as I wanted. It worked out. They did not want to wait, and they accepted other nice offers.

Something tells me Coach Saban will still be able to recruit well in the future. This situation is not perfect, but it is being blown up out of proportion by some of our fans.

It's over. Time for people to get over it and move on.

We ARE arrogant, we ARE better than you and Alabama IS the center of the college football universe. Get over it!

I will play devil's advocate as well. We are all looking at the kids disappointment in the situation falling to realize he used emotion instead of thinking about it and wanted something different. Let me go back to the Xbox analogy. Your son (DP) see that it is receipt instead of a physical Xbox, which this relates to him still having an offer just not being able to physically join the team in August. So the son gets upset and disappointed in Dad (Saban and Alabama) and says he wants the Xbox today. You tell him that certain circumstances kept that from happening (DP joining in August), but he wont listen. So in his emotional state he says, "I dont want that, if I cant have it today I dont want it." You kindly remind him he still is going to get the Xbox, but again he says he wants it today. So the kid (DP) goes to the store and exchanges the receipt for a PS3 instead of realizing his Dad (Saban) never went back on his word. Like we always say kids are emotional and this is what happened here. DP's offer was NEVER reascended, just changed. He was still going to be a part of the tide (Get the Xbox), he just had to wait. DP didnt want to wait so he signed with ARK ( exchange for PS3).

I am sure I went all over the place with that. HAHAH sorry.

  • agree with the OP. i dont care about greyshirting and oversigning at all because we are handicapped by the 25 rule. hell i didnt even care about it before the 25 rule. but philon and taylor were not handled correctly IMO. even still, i am ok with it but it could affect coaches at high schools allowing us to recruit his players, not to mention the PR in the press and general word of mouth....then it is not ok because it hurts our recruiting

  • I think one of the issues is we are looking at this from a fan on a message boards perspective and not from the recruits. For Philon this is the biggest decision/thing that has ever happened to him. He has been dreaming/thinking about signing with bama on signing day for 6+ months and for a kid his age that's probably the majority of what he's been thinking about every second of the day. So just as his excitement is going to reach it's climax he's future coaches tell him that he can't follow his dream (sign on signing day) and he has to wait to joIn the team 6 months later. Many of team mates where going to be on stage with him, they've been talking all year about how cool it's going to be to sign on signing day and now Philon can't. How humiliated do you think he was when he was up on stage and his dream has been crushed...well we do know because he left the stage in the middle of the ceremony and the coaches found him crying in the hallway.

The past two weeks we have no idea what he was thinking and what was being put in his head. To him he probably thought "why would they take my dream away and man they must not think I'm not good enough if the don't want me to sign when they origianally told me I could". Again we're trying to look at it from our perspective and not his.

Anyway you cut it you don't tell a kid two weeks before signing day he is going to have to grey shirt. That is essentially crushing the biggest dream they've ever had (again from their perspective). IMO if you want greyshirt a kid you should tell him that when you give him the original offer.

Any way you cut it we messed up with Philon and I feel bad for the kid.

  • Entirely too much is bieng made out of this. On 105.5 radio this morning, they were encouraging callers to go to AOL.com, and look at some video. It seems to me that some are trying to make it appear that we lied to these players.

  • I don't think there is any backlash, we are Alabama. The epic center of college football right now. For example....if you had a chance at Jessica Beil...but you heard she had the crabs....it is STILL Jessica Beil.
