My son was recruited by USC to play golf. Taken to all the famous courses, the sights of L.A, and FYI, USC is a beautiful campus, and the tailgating/walk from it to the LA coliseum is nice. Band playing, etc. Did I mention it's a private school, very expensive and very highly academically rated, and the home to the power brokers of the West Coast?Lastly, the girls. Drop dead gorgeous rich girls.I'm a Bama grad living in Destin but honestly, their presentation is second to none, and I can only imagine if my son was a 6'4' , 250 lb. linebacker. Don't fall for it located in bad part of town, etc., etc. Having done this deal it's not only conceivable they recruit well, it's hardly possible for them not to. I think their advantages are so overwhelming that it's obvious, some of us can't see it because we're SEC blind, like the Grove and town square in Oxford or Quad and strip in Ttown , as examples, make up for it.Many people prefer a high end sports car to a tricked up Ford truck.

Exactly my point. Southern necks can't see the reality of the situation. How about a few more examples, better and more definable? L.A. has Wilshire Drive/ Rodeo Drive; Ttown Greensboro Ave.. LA has the San Gabriel Mountains and Pacific Ocean- Birmingham has the Vulcan over the mountain and the same type equivalent differences/ disadvantages goes for any other SEC town. I had a son graduate from FSU and UF, and I'm a Bama grad. You can't compare again, the landmarks, sights, et al of SoCal with anything in our area, Atlanta included. Quite frankly, given a choice by a recruit, USC is going to win time and again. It's like when we played Texas in the 2009 BCS title game. I had a little more fun out there in Laguna Beach than the usual SEC town. No offense intended, just giving an explanation of why USC is and will always recruit at/near the top.

For some reason your comments brought to mind the movie "1941" where the Japanese submarine is off the coast of California near "Hollywood", and the whole crew is star struck. The notion that California is the golden land, the land of milk and honey, permeates our society and while parts of California are nice, the thought that it is uniformly awesome is seriously misguided. You really don't have to walk too far from the USC campus to find yourself in a place you'd probably be a lot better off not being. I have two California cousins that now attend UA, specifically to get them away from all of that. Point is - different strokes for different folks. Color me "Ford Pickup with a Dead Deer in the Back" Crimson.

Your opinion. I disagree and I'm not a "neck". California is overcrowded and full of a bunch of very weird people. I do agree that they are flashy and will draw some recruits but they were down for a long time before Carroll got there so recruiting is not a given even with the advantages they have.
I will say this though. USC knows how to field a cheer squad! Every one of them has a nice rack and those tight sweaters are the bomb. Cheerleaders are supposed to look hot and yell go team. The people who turned cheering into a gymnastic event have ruined it. Hell I bet a boob job is a requirement to be on the USC squad.

Well some people enjoy Beverly Hills and the sights of LA or NY and other enjoy going to college close to home with friends in a neat town and with people they relate with. I am more a big city diversity guy myself and would agree with you but you are not better than others who disagree or prefer things differently. Nick Saban obviously left the beaches of Miami to coach in Tuscaloosa and a lot of that is professional but I also think he is prefers a smaller / more private quiet town. He isn’t an uncultured redneck and you are not better than him because of that preference. Having lived both places I prefer New York to Tuscaloosa, but I don't think given the opportunity I would play for Rutgers instead of Alabama to be closer to the city.
Plus your entire point is incorrect in my opinion or more appropriately not at all a huge factor here. Is there a single recruit Kiffin has signed in the Southeast besides a few kids that he stole immediately from UT? He is cleaning up as the premier football institution on the West Coast and it has nothing to do with picking between Tuscaloosa/Athens and LA. He is simply continuing on the idea that USC is cooler from a football standpoint than UCLA, Cal, Oregon, ASU, etc.? It’s going to take a while for that to go away because it’s all these kids remember under Pete Carroll, USC was in the championship picture nearly every year in the 2000s. If the LA factor was a huge deal, UCLA should be cleaning up because it's a bigger and better school in the exact same city in a nicer area with a better campus.

Anybody else surprised USC is recruiting so well?
