And it still doesn't resolve the issue of fans making long, expensive, cross-country trips on back-to-back weekends.

meh....i think that should be the absolute least of their worries

You are right. Just like in 1965 when #4 Alabama won their bowl game and jumped up to No. 1. It used to be fun to get up and watch wall to wall football on New Year's day. You had to see every game before we knew what the final landscape was going to be. The need for fairness and an absolute answer has destroyed what was really good about college football.

I didn't feel like I was destroyed or missing anything by watching us dominate LSU. We knew the winner was going to be the champ, what's wrong with that?

IMO this is an easy fix. Since +1 or 4 team playoff seems inevitable, and to preserve the importance of the regular season, reward the top two teams a home game to be played around Dec 26-27th. Then let the winners play each other around Jan 5-6th. Start all the lower bowl games the day after the "final four", play your big bowl games from the 31st-2nd then spend a few days hyping the championship.

Gives the top two teams plenty of time to focus on new opponents plus get moved to the bowl site and do the festivities. If we are worried about offending the losers (which I have no doubt will be brought up) you can reserve two spots in big bowls for them or just let them play each other and give them some BestBuy gift cards.

This would allow the best four teams to compete, make winning in the regular season vital all the way to the end, and keep the time and school restraints manageable. If teams like SDState and Miami OH can play on or right after Christmas and manage their finals then I am sure the big boys could as well. This also would be a great way to kickoff the Bowl Season with the Championship ending it. I know old timers are going to hate this, but this would be a logical way to solve some of the big dilemmas.

**BUT** if they try to limit conference participation or do any kind of conference tie-in then the SEC should pull out (hehe) and start a league of their own. Doing either of those two things would accomplish absolutely nothing, if there aren't more than 2 teams better than the top two SEC teams then tough titty - this whole concept is to decide the best team in the country.
