BCS or March Madness?

  • Not which do you enjoy more? But which crowns a TRUER champion. I say the BCS (even for all of its flaws) because Kentucky and Syracuse were clearly the two best teams this year. Say a team like Vandy (who's been red hot) or Indiana wins this thing. They're both good teams, but by no stretch of the imagination are either of those teams the best team in the country. I say the BCS crowns a truer champion because it's a matchup of the two best teams...usually. Agree or not? Go.

  • Its not even close. BCS.

As much as we love march madness - you have your VCU's or George Mason's make runs to a championship every year. What if they put Middle Tennessee State vs Alabama in the National Championship (g) how nuts would we all go?

    .
IF they had a tourney of just say the top 20 teams in America, then I could be fine with that crowing a true champion. But its simple a crap shoot tourney. While we can argue this team over that team in the BCS, it actaully gets the best two teams more than not.

  • BCS without a doubt.

  • BCS..We get to watch conference tournaments and they compare with March madness..They are actually debating the last 4 in..Give me results only and the top 2..or even the top 4 in 2 years..You are not debating .500 teams, you are only talking the best of the best..

  • Just to play devil's advocate....what about the "winning it on the field/court" argument? Does that support March Madness enough to make an argument? Does it show how unfair the BCS is that the football equivalent of Butler or George Mason (i.e. Boise or Houston) doesn't get a shot?

  • I like the notion of playing it on the field. But to get a true champion in a one and done type of tourney, you need to limit the number of teams who can enter it. If you want a true champion, you can't water that down by allowing so many teams in that you could end up with a winner you don't feel deserves it.

I'm all for the addition in football of a four team type of system. But I would never want it to go much farther than that. Truly how many years do we have more than 4 teams once the regular season is over deserve a shot at being our National Champion? Not very often and if its happens one out of 8,9 years - I can live with that .

This but the College World Series does it best.

  • Other than the title game the bowls are basically meaningless, ergo, March Madness > BCS IMO.

Yeah I love that format as well. It sets up perfectly for baseball - but would not work in any other sport. Especially football. You can't play that many games and you can't play multiple games in a week especially (not if you want a real game with all your players in it and healthy) (g)

And because of March Madness, the regular season is irrelevant.

Try only winning 15 games and see if you get in. You're made because of automatic qualifiers of conference tournaments. That's not March Madness's fault nor does it make the regular season irrelevant. I've been saying get rid of conference tourneys for years.

  • March Madness...Some teams get better as the year goes on and some teams don't end as well as they started at the beginning of the season. March Madness gives you the best teams at the end of the season.

  • Sorry guys, its march madness. March madness crowns a TRUE champion. 68 teams get an opportunity to prove it on the court. it is hard to say Kentucky and Syracuse are obviously the 2 best teams when both teams just got beat. As long as the BCS exists there will always be controversy but with march madness there is none.

  • I think as Bama fans, we're more inclined to say the BCS because that is familiar territory to us, but I say since we're in the tourney, I'm enjoying this March Madness hype this season

  • March Madness is loads of fun...but strictly a truer champ? I think BCS.

I almost added that part. Decided against it. It is a perfect setup though. I really doubt you're going to see many inferior teams make it through that format at all. Single elimination tournaments are fun and allow for the exciting hot streaks but that's about all they're good for.

    yep...

March madness is fun, but it no more crowns the best team in Basketball than the local sports nut on the radio can choose it.

  • BCS no question. Teams get into the NC equation in basketball because the tourney is so huge.

One of the reasons I oppose any playoff in CFB that has more than 4 teams.

68 Teams where you have conference champs say like Alabama State get in and teams like BAMA, who could beat them 9 times out of 10, sent to the NIT. I'm using that as an example from years past. In March Madness, there are way too many teams that actually have no business in that tournament. In the BCS, Noone doubted BAMA or LSU's credibility to be National Champs b/c they proved it on the field from Sept. to December.
