Bama first team out in newest Lunardi bracket

  • One spot ahead of Kentucky. One spot behind Tennessee.

Has UA, UK and Ole Miss among first 4 out. Tonight's game is our season, folks.

It's a big one. We still have it all to play for- hope the guys realize the opportunity they have and make the most of it

winning out the season is the only hope we've got, one would think.

  • Even if we beat Ole Miss we still don't have a RPI top 50 win and apparently only one team has made it without a top 50 win and it was Clemson when the field expanded. UT and UK are on the verge of reaching the top 50 but if they win to move into top the 50 that may steal our spot in the NCAA.

  • I just can't believe this, but I'll take it. MONSTER game tonight!

  • I think we have a good shot of getting in if we win the next two games. Winning the next two games is a must IMO, I also think if we win the next two, winning at least one game in the tournament would solidify us in the dance as long as we didn't get blown out.

  • Tonight is an absolute must win, no two ways about it.

At some point it becomes a process of elimination. They have to get to 68 teams. Agree it would be nice to have a marquee win, but there are a lot of mediocre teams fighting for about 5 spots.

Teams like Kentucky, UMass, St. Mary's, MTSU, Southern Miss, Ole Miss, Belmont, etc. have one or fewer Top 50 wins.

At some point, somebody's gonna get in just because they've got to get in. If we win at Ole Miss and beat UGA, I think we'd be "in" heading into the conference tournament. At that point, it's all about who gets upset, etc. If we lose either OM/UGA, I think we have to make it to Sunday in Nashville to have a chance.

I'm assuming UT will lose again, but they probably have the best shot at winning out among SEC bubble teams. Home vs Mizzou is their one shot at losing prior to Nashville. If we win out, OM will lose again by default of playing us. UK has to go to UGA and then gets Florida on a quick turnaround. High chance they lose once more.

Winning the next two could put us in the best position among SEC bubble teams, and I have to think the conference gets a third team in.

What's intersting to me is that if we had beaten Tulane and mercer we would be in without too much debate.

However, this point you made would still be true.

My post is to point out that I'm not a fan of our scheduling under grant. We have to figure out a way to play several more quality teams, top 20 teams, pre conference play in order to get our rpi higher. Relying on our conference record every year is ridiculous.

I can't do the math but just for hypothetical how much higher would our rpi be if we had been beaten by 2 top 20 teams in December instead of Tulane and mercer? Same record just playing quality teams.

I also don't understand that. It seems like the only big time team we're able to get to come to Tuscaloosa in non-conf were forced to do so by the SEC/Big East challenge and VCU by Grant's contract. All others were neutral site like Okie St, Georgetown in BHam, KState in Mobile, etc.

That's a good point. It's sort of the Mark Gottfried school of scheduling after he got screwed by the committee in his third season. (Ducks as another CMG comparison is made.) We saw this last year when we lost at home to Georgetown, as well. It was a "good" loss.

Gottfried eventually found a way to schedule a bunch of good teams - few great ones - but a lot of good ones, in the non-conference. There weren't too many 250+ cakewalks on the schedule, but there weren't many 20+ games either. That way, if he won a majority he was in good shape, but there weren't any losses that would kill him. That and a stronger SEC were reasons why he consistently got in with worse records than we have even now.

I think CAG has been hurt a lot by trying to schedule "name" teams and then those "name" teams tank it the year we play them. Look at our games vs Okla State, Texas Tech, Georgia Tech, Oregon State, Villanova, etc. In other years those all could've been RPI boosters but Ok State, TTU and Ga Tech were pure garbage when we played them.

@VCU this year wasn't a bad loss, nor was @Cinci. But by losing both it took away any margin for error elsewhere.

  • I haven't really followed many of the other bubble teams but have others just not stepped up kinda like we haven't?

Awhile back, everyone thought we would be borderline if we could only lose 2 more games. However, that was 4 losses ago. Does anyone have a theory how we can keep losing but remain on the bubble? Other teams losing? Website traffic by having Bama always listed?
