Barrett Jones and the Draft..

  • I would like to hear some opinions and arguments as to why some of you think that he returns for his senior year or why you think he will declare for the 2012 draft (the deadline for declaring is 1/15).

One of his biggest assets is his extreme versatility, having started 14 games at right guard (earning freshman all-american as a redshirt freshman in 2009(redshirted after 3 games in 2008), and 11 games at the same position in 2010. He has started at left tackle this whole season, performing admirably I might add, at a position that is not considered his "natural position. Too, he has seen spot duty at center during his career. Ironically, the only position he has NOT played this year, has been right guard :)

Another asset of his is that he is incredibly athletic for his size. at 6'5'' and 310 pounds, he has been clocked as fast as 4.89 in the 40-yard dash.

His football IQ is through the roof allowing him to quickly spot the immediate threats in pass protection and to never be out of position.

His knocks, while limited, are his short arms and bad hand placement (although he DOES get them up quickly). These short arms also make it difficult to keep defenders off his frame. I've also heard it said that he doesn't possess the best ability to change direction. With these things in mind, I had a coach tell me that he may be more suited to teams that run a zone blocking scheme so that he can just gain position and seal..

Many scouts predict that he will be a late-first or early-second round pick in the draft but I've seen some predict him to be a mid-rounder at best . Furthermore, I've seen him listed fairly consistently as the number three ranked guard of 171 and while that is extremely high, tackles typically go first in the draft. Too, there is no doubt that David DeCastro will be the first OG to be drafted.

Earning a diploma does not apply to him because if he returns, he will already have his degree. I have had a couple of opportunities to speak to him over the past several months and he would not tip his hat in the least, primarily, IMO, because he had not made up his mind. One appealing draw to him though, is the opportunity to come back and play center after Vlachos is gone so that he can add "experienced" center to his resume. In talking to him, I couldn't get over him consistently replying to me as "sir"! In my mind, I don't feel like I appear much noticeably older than him, but when I consider that he was only TWO YEARS OLD when we won the '92 title, it FREAKS ME OUT :)

Okay, I apologize for being so long, but I wanted to discuss something other the Heisman and the BCS. My personal opinion is that he returns for his senior year. I'm thinking about a 60% chance he returns. What are your thoughts?

    Thanks!

  • He is coming back.

NFL teams/scouts want him at Center. He will play Center in 2012, prove that he is an elite C, and get drafted late 1st, or 2nd round in 2013 draft.

  • The breakdown on Jones is too small for NFL guard, too slow for NFL tackle, prototype size and intelligence for NFL center. Next year's O-line will be amazing.

  • I learned more about draft grades from your post than I had read anywhere else about him. If a considerable number of guys call him a mid rounder, I'd bet he comes back. He has a reason to come back (Center), and he has no immediate need to leave (I don't think a private school kid who went to college for free is hurting too bad financially).

The financial upside to coming back seems really high because late 1st to mid 2nd Rd money is considerably more than what players get in the 3rd-4th rounds. He won't be drafted to play center for mopping up a few times. SInce he's smart as hell, I think he'd make a hell of a pro center if he has the skill set. We all know he does, but the scouts could use a year of seeing it.

  • Carpenter went - I believe - 24th last year. Jones is an Outland Trophy winner and rated much higher than Carpenter. He is a top 15 pick right now. If he comes back he could be a top 10 with another great year. Ignore all those stupid mock drafts ....those dorks forget about Jones. NFL Player Personnel folks love Jones and say he is a 1st half of the 1st round guy and could be higher depending on his combine performance.

    1) I have been told he will come back

    2) He will play C in the NFL. He wants to play C at Alabama next year and warrant a high draft pick.

Yes he could most definately come out this year, and be drafted fairly high due to the sheer fact that he is versatile. But when BJones comes back next year and wins the Rimington as a Senior (which we'd all expect him to do, knowing BJones the way we do), he will lock himself into the 1st round. Remember, 1 and sometimes 2 centers get drafted in the late 1st/early 2nd every year.

exactly......they want their guards more like Chance Warmack (broad) 6'3.......

This is a good point. I checked, and he's the exact same size as Steve Hutchinson, who I'm going to call my typical NFL road-grader. I based the size comment on what the BOL staff told me.

Staff, you have some serious explaining to do. I will not be humiliated on the internetz like this.

  • I believe he comes back for three reasons, 2 of which have been mentioned.

! - He fits the NFL profile for center, so a years experience at that position will boost his NFL standing.
2.- He'd enjoy playing with his brother Harrison, who should see the field a lot more next year.
3 - He began a masters program this past August. If he returns he should be ablle to complete that program next fall.

I understand his family is not hurting financially which just adds to the case for his return next fall.

I sure hope he does return as that will definitely help our offense.

I hope whoever told you was right because he can certainly be the difference between a good OL to a great one.

Your point about centers in the draft is incorrect, though. A friend and I were talking the other day about the fact that there have only been FIVE centers not named Pouncy to be drafted in the first round in TEN years and NONE have been drafted higher than fifteenth.

You bring up two good points regarding his brother and his master's degree. There is no denying that he and his brother are close. Aside from "hearing" this, I have never seen him before when his brother wasn't with him (and before someone pops a joke, I don't mean practice or games:)

I haven't ever heard anyone knock on his size. I have only heard criticism of his arm length.

  • Having known the family for over 25 years, I believe BJ will be back next year and as several have alluded to, move to the center position full time.

BJ wants to complete his Master's in accounting which is more important than an initial NFL contract to him. He is in a fortunate position that not many have financially. While I do see BJ having a great NFL career, that is a relatively short career and BJ will make much more money in the long term, in the business world (and family businesses) after the NFL.

The family hasn't made any definite statements about BJ's future, however I'd put it at 95% he will be back for his Senior season of eligibility.
