Best High School Player You Have Ever Seen In Person

  • Mine is Eric Berry. Saw this kid play against Starr's Mill back in the day. The most impressive player i have ever seen at the high school level.

A close second was Calvin Johnson.

    The Stomp

  • Tony Nathan. I was afreshman on punt coverage team, and Nathan was Huffman's returner.

I was first one there, he didn't juke me, dodge me, etc...
He RAN OVER me like a bus.

  • David Palmer. Back when I was a freshman in High School at Central High in Tuscaloosa, Central played Jackson Olin in the first round of the playoffs. At the time, Central was the favorite to win the state title and had an outstanding defense. He absolutely shredded Central. He punted, kicked the ball off, ran back punts, ran back kickoffs, played qb, running back, wide receiver, played defensive back, and kicked field goals and extra points. He was absolutely amazing. Central eventually pulled it out but not without a lot of anxious moments.

In he final moment of the game, Central was ahead by a few points. Unfortunately, we had to kickoff to Jackson Olin. The kicker was told the kick it out, the crowd was screaming to kick the ball out of bounds, they thought Central was going to kick out of bounds on the opposite side of the field of David Palmer. Well, unfortunately, our kicker squibbed it down the left side of the field but it never went out. It instead stopped on the five yard line inbounds. Palmer scooped it up and he was gone. He ran around and through the entire defense. However, since he played every play of the night, he was just tired enough for someone to catch from behind on the Central five yard line and end the game. But he scored a touchdown in every was possible in the game and he kicked extra points. Sorry for the long post but that was the greatest performance I have ever seen in person. He was simply unstoppable with or without the ball in his hands.

  • Ray Charles "Rooster" Jones: Rooster Jones remains a legend in Pascagoula and all over the state of Mississippi for his exploits at Pascagoula High School from 1974-1976. In 31 games over those three years, Rooster rushed for 3863 yards and scored 51 touchdowns. PHS went 24-7 over that time period including a 12-0 perfect season in 1976 that ended with the crowning of the Panthers as state champions. According to Panther Coach Johnny Woitt, a former professional football player and Panther great himself, Rooster played hurt for two of those years. Of Rooster, he said “As I’ve said before, he’s the best running back I’ve ever seen.” During his injury plagued senior season Rooster rushed for 1895 yards and scored 28 touchdowns and 4 two-point conversions.

Rooster signed a scholarship to play college football for Coach Jackie Sherrill at Pittsburgh where the old injuries finally caught up with him and brought his abilities back in to the realm of mortals. He still merited a look in the NFL and according to an old teammate was the last man cut from his squad.
