Bourn is red HOT. But..

  • Whats kinda pissing me off is Fredi G is not attempting any steals with him during this hot hitting of his. His OBP is sky high in the past 11 games (21 for 44 with 7 walks in the past 11 games), yet he has ZERO stolen base attempts in last 8 games. Sure, we can get away with it when we faced the likes of the Pirates, D-Backs, and Houston. I was told last year from a friend of mine that gets to take pics in dugout before games that he heard that Prado gets a bit lost in his swing when he sees runners stealing. Which would sort of make sense considering he bats in the 2 hole right after Bourn. Anyway, RTR and Go Braves and Chiefs!

  • That would be interesting on Prado since there are other options in the 2 slot and Prado has enough stick to drop in the order. I would think Bourn has the green light. I thought the situations today only allowed one real opportunity and I do not know why Bourn did not take it. Heyward has been running pretty frequently and Bourn is a much better runner.

Well, today he led off 2 innings with singles and his third hit came in the 8th with 2 outs. The other time he got on base was from a walk but kinda hard to run when the pitcher is on base too in front of him. But after those 3 hits he was the only player on base. FG did this stalling late in the year last season and IMO it cost us plenty of chances to score runs. Like I said, we can prolly get away with this tactic against weak teams like PITT, HOU and ARZ (as we showed) But...Not Philly, WAS, or even NYM. I say run him, and run him often! And if he gets injured from running, FG must have ran him too much! (LMAO)

  • Research has shown that runners are very distracting to batters. So you are right on with that one.

  • Not a braves fan but, the way the rest of the lineup has been producing the idea of bourn running is a negative imo..the percentages of him stealing are ok but no one wants to run out an inning..Bourn will take those chances against good pitching deep in games, but they dont HAVE to be a running team to score runs right now

  • Fredi doesn't have to tell Bourn when to steal. Bourn has a green light pretty much any time he wants to go.

I'm with this. The way we're hitting right now, I would argue we're better off to not take the risk of losing an out and let the sticks do the work. When we get to a stretch where we're struggling to score, maybe let him run more to kick-start the offense.

  • Also, Bourn is in the pitcher's head big time - with out the steals. He is getting a handful of throwovers every time on, plus a pitchout or two every game. It's causing some of the pitchers to rush and get out of sync, which led to a walk for Prado today.

We're like 2nd in the NL in stolen bases (led by Heyward) so it's hard to say we aren't attempting any steals.

  • Just mho but badidea

There are times you need to run to create advantages and of course produce runs playing old school NL baseball. So far this season those times haven't presented themselves very often. One other factor right now is Prado is not the best in the world in this exact situation when he's at the plate.

Hey, there really is no right or wrong answer. Some managers like to run any chance they get. Some, do not follow that philosophy.

Agreed. Every time Bourn gets on, the pitchers are 100% aware of what he is doing. Prado is seeing way more fastballs with Bourn on base as well.

  • Line up is fine...just need Huddy healthy, JJ to stop sucking, beachy and minor keep it up, and delgado or trehan to hold down the 5th spot...

if the O stays how it is, we just need to have one more run than the other team by the end of the 6th and we will win a lot of games...

    MGWAL8617

  • Yeah I heard Prado kinda struggled in the 2 hole last year...because he wasn't used to a runner like Bourn...

I don't really know the answer. I would give Bourn the green light whenever he wants. And if Prado needs to move down in the order that's fine. Prado's been swinging pretty good lately.

If Hudson and Jurjens are both in the rotation, there is no need for Delgado or Tehran. Hudson, Hanson, Beachy, Minor, Jurjens...

  • This just in.

They sent Jurrjens to the minors. He's been terrible since the All-star Break last year

Wrong. I'd like to see more running with MB is all i said. Never said winning was my way or highway. Winning is winning is winning, period. We agree there.

  • Prado was trying to take more pitches last year in order to give Bourn chances to steal. He was getting behind in the count as a result. Prado is normally aggressive at the plate, so taking pitches he normally would swing at, got him out of his comfort zone, to say the least. Bourn & Fredi talked to him about being himself and not worry about helping Bourn. Bourn is a smart baseball player. He realizes that he helps Prado more by being on 1st than 2nd. As someone alluded to earlier, Bourn on 1st takes up more of the pitcher's attention and causes the catcher to call more fastballs.

  • I still think that Prado is bothered by Bourn being on base at all and needs to be switched with Jason in the lineup. Martin is noticeably uncomfortable with Bourn on 1st and hit into at least two double plays this weekend. He approach at the plate changes big time and it seems to really throw him off. Yesterday, when he led off the 7th he tomahawked a first pitch fastball out to center. If Bourn's on first, I don't think he swings at that pitch because he's trying to be patient and give Michael a chance to run early in the count. But like some of you guy's have already said, it's hard to argue with winning baseball.

  • I've never really been a Fredi fan, but the Braves are leading the NL in runs scored. You can't be running into outs when the bats are hot. This hot streak is not just important to get wins now, it's important to give everyone in the lineup confidence for later in the season. When the bats cool down (and they will at some point), then you can start trying to manufacture runs with speed.

The thing about speed is that it isn't as "mental" as hitting. You don't have to "get into a groove" the same way you do at the plate. Bourn can start running at any time and it won't hurt him if he hasn't done it in a few weeks. Because batting is so mental, you don't want to do anything to disrupt things unless you need to. Right now, the Braves don't need to do anything so Fredi has the luxury of just letting them play. And as someone said above, in an ideal world, Fredi never sends Bourn; Bourn picks his spots on his own.
