Breaking down each Bama offensive drive vs UGA

  • Following is the result of each drive, and on drives that did not result in a score, the sequence of plays on first through third down that lead to the stop.

    1) PUNT : 4 yd run, incomplete pass, incomplete pass
    2) Fumble : incomplete pass, 6 yd pass, sack and fumble
    3) PUNT : 3 yd pass, 4 yd rush, 2 yd rush (delay of game on fake punt)
    4) PUNT : incomplete pass, -1 yd rush, sack
    5) INT : 3 yd rush, 1 yd rush (to the one yard line and Lacy fumble), interception
    6) TD : only one pass play during the drive for 3 yds, the rest runs
    7) FG : one pass incomplete, the rest were runs to set up the FG (poor clock management right before the half)
    8) BLOCKED FG : incomplete pass, 2 yd rush, incomplete pass (tipped pass and negated PI), blocked FG
    9) TD : no passes
    10) TD : one pass resulting in pass interference, the rest runs
    11) PUNT : 2 yd rush, 2 yd rush, AJ dropped back to pass but scrambled for 2 yd gain
    12) TD : one pass for two yards and the bomb to Coop, the rest runs
    13) PUNT : 2 yd rush, 2 yd rush, 3 yd rush (last drive of the game)

Draw your own conclusions, but UGA never stopped BAMA when we ran three times on first through third down until the final drive of the game. And keep in mind that our worst offensive quarter (the first quarter) was by far the quarter in which our pass to run ratio was highest (9:5).

Good breakdown. One thing that constantly gets missed by those people dogging those of us who want a more 60/40 run to pass instead of the opposite (which is what has occurred in our other big games this year) is that by running the ball that frequently it keeps your D off the field. We run fewer plays than about 80 percent of all football teams in the nation. By doing so it keeps your Defense from having to be on the field as long. Against A&M and LSU they combined to avg about 80 plays a game. That is 15 more plays a game than we allow the opposing team to run on avg. Just by law of averages they are going to have more yards and more points when we don't run the ball as much b/c the other team is going to have the ball more.

Besides that...running the football is by far our strength.

Absolutely, and there is far less risk of a turnover or negative play when running straight at a team. It's demoralizing to the opposition as well.

  • It is a double edge sword. If we run 50 times for barely over a 100 yards and lose everyone says why not put it on the veteran QB. I just wish we would go back to running to set up the pass. PA looked pretty impressive to me in the 4th Saturday night. By the way you missed the Christion Jones slant pass early in the game.

Only thing is that our running game has been hugely successful...even early in the game. We even averaged 7 yards a carrry against lsu.

Then we would throw on first trying to get them off guard. Just take what they give you and let them beat themselves.

He wasn't listing every play, just the plays that immediately preceded the end of the possession.

  • I'd really like to see a breakdown showing the level of success we have when AJ in shotgun vs. under center. It seems like we are a lot more successful when AJ is under center.

On run plays, the backs have a chance to gain some momentum before they get the ball.

On PA passes, the play action takes a little bit longer to execute, which results in the LBs being closer to the LOS, while the receivers have a little longer time to get open.

  • Nice review, but the only thing that made the game close was 3 special teams plays creating a 21 point swing. Except for those plays it wasn't close but that's why they play the game. ND will need similar help. Let's hope they don't get it.

  • Bottom line: we are a running team that is successful when we use play action to set up completions, especially the long ball.

AJ, while he has all the tools, is just not a great drop back passer right now. We consistently struggle to complete passes that don't come off play action or where we clear out space over the middle.
