But We're So Young

  • Once the season gets well under way and Bama is (likely) headed toward another stellar year and our little brothers across the state are (likely) very disappointed in their results, we will (likely) again hear that the real problem is that they are still so young. Consider this.

I was looking at some things regarding our roster as it appears heading into the season. I count 83 players I think are on scholarship. This ignores all three WRs who are suspended, and includes all of the 2012 signing class, including the one who hasn't been cleared yet.

Now, looking at eligibility, I count 8 seniors, 21 juniors, 17 sophs, and 37 freshmen. Thus, 54 of our 83 scholarship players are freshmen or sophomores. Put more realistically, 54 of our players will have one year of less of playing experience as they enter the season - this is 65% of the total roster.

So if we do indeed have a very successful season, while others in the state struggle, perhaps the real reason is not experience, but talent and coaching?

  • My numbers also do not take into account that four of the juniors and seniors are jc transfers, and have one year or less of Division 1 experience. I see no need to split hairs.
