CNS and his plan to stop these new fast paced.

  • Speed. You have to penetrate and contain the edges. Watch Manziel's highlights. It's really hard to slow him down when he's faster, quicker than most everyone rushing him.....and he's accurate as a passer on the run. "Pressure Bursts Pipes"

Overall, smaller, faster, more athletic personnel against spread teams. Stll need the big guys though for the LSUs, UGAs, and Notre Dames that employ power running.

Kevin Durant is moving up in my favorite All-Time Athletes list. Mama raised him right.

This is the best answer of this post and exactly what I was thinking as well, but with a twist. Still continuing to dominate the line of scrimmage with a combo of disruptive LB's who are big mixed with coverage linebackers and safeties who have a combo of power and speed. When Collins gets the system down, he will be nasty for this. We had no pass rush of consistent quality last year and having an athletic DE/OLB who can disrupt the pocket "WHEN NEEDED" or When we "choose" to Blitz will make all the difference in those A&M type games.

Remember Rolando against Tebow? Big, disruptive and fast.

Exactly. Alabama's 2 worst games on defense were against big boy football teams. LSU and Georgia had the most success against Alabama on offense. There is this myth that Alabama had all this trouble with the hurry up. The truth is that Alabama had a bad quarter against the hurry up for obvious reasons. I expect a continuation of the 2nd,3rd and 4th quarters when Bama faces A&m in a few months.

I don't think it's new that Saban is looking for more fast twitch guys on the Dline. I think we thought we may have some of those already on campus but not as many as we initially thought.

  • Alabama had two problems last season. You could spread us out totally and we suffered on defense, but what LSU also exposed was how bad our pass defense could be in the base package. When Dickson, Hubbard, Johnson, and Depriest were on the field (and if you had Lester or especially Sunseri 1 on 1 with a plus guy) we were fairly vulnerable there to passing.

So I can see us going a tad lighter on MLBers and doing better to get some safeties that can single cover better. Its not a lot of players, if we had one more safety who could cover better and a linebacker, we probably would have been better. A big guy who can pass rush is also something we could really use as well.

Let's not forget that we held A&M to 9 points after the first quarter, once we adjusted scheme- wise and to the speed of the game. Great players like Manziel will make plays, you just need to limit them, which we did with our current players for 3 quarters.

Further, the LSU game completely drained us both physically and mentally.I realize that many posters reject the LSU game as factor in our poor start against A&M, but they ignore reality.

True..& we were beaten up when we played A&M, especially AJ....this year we get them 2nd game..."healthier and rested"...YEAH!

  • In addition to the above, you can't rush just 4 against Johnny Football. Convention would say rush 4 and play zone behind it so DBs can keep their eye on the play behind them. But that won't work, because combined with slow twitch guys and bigger/more lanes he's just to elusive and will find a gap and then DBs see it hesitate and WR gets open and dude was lethal throwing on the run. Got to bring 5 and close up some lanes and make him uncomfortable.

  • Hard to do but the way to slow down an O totally dependent upon a do it all QB is to punish him. RGIII took one too many this season.

  • Our DL was built to build a wall rather than penetrate. Against these offenses that OM and aTm run, you can't do that. You need to get pressure and stop the play before it develops. The best DL for those spread attacks are guys like Lorenzo Washington, Nick Gentry, and Wallace Gilberry. 6'3 270 types that have quick twitch ability and allow you to flush Manzel early enough to allow your linebackers to react and not end up out of position before their reaction.

I also want to add that we were not able to emulate what UF and LSU did because we didn't have a Kevin Minter and we didn't have the safeties that UF had. Manzel was at his worst when teams rushed 5 and forced him to start his impromptu act early. You still have to play disciplined and not rush past the passer (which Stinson did alot in the 1st half). So having edge rushers isn't necessarily the answer. If you watch what Stanford did to Oregon it was caused completely by Stanford's DTs forcing the sweep plays and outside runs/zone reads to take a step back and then try and turn the corner.

  • They also ran the ball effectively, and controlled the clock. Just like they did against USC. They never gave up on running the ball and eventually wore the defense down. Kept the offense off the field so they never got into rhythm.

  • i think the key is;

    1. have 3 corners
    2. have 2 Ng type space eaters to hold the point of attack on the line because of less LB's on field
    3. CJ Mosley.

of course, im not Nick Saban, and i just wait to see what he does

  • That is all is very true. We need some quick DL and have someone stay on Manziel. He is unique.I know A&M recruited recievers that are very tall. They play BB also. So I am not sure how that is going to play out, but Manziel is the key to A&M. He is their recruiter believe me. I am tired of hearing about A&M here in Texas. Roll Tide Roll

  • I don't think you will see noticeable changes in the scheme. I do think you will see us be more athletic on the edges up front and at the safeties.
