Can we defend speed sweeps this time?

  • Seems like Michael Ford hurt us the most in November. Harris couldnt contain at one point and there were a few other times he got loose around the end. Shepard is also dangerous on those types of plays and with the defense having to honor JJ as a threat to run also, how do we scheme up a way to shut those plays down?

  • We've got to contain the edges. That's where the got us last time. Especially with the speed option.

  • Put 12 in the box.

Nah but we'll be fine. Seeing the option from Ga. Southern should have helped and Saban and smart have a month to go over everything LSU has done this year to plan for stopping them in the NCG.

What I'm curious about is if we'll see some crazy offensive/special teams plays like we have this season and did in our last NCG. The fake field goal to Michael Williams earlier in the season, the fake punt in the 2009 NCG, etc.

And maybe we'll realize that if we're between the opponent's 35 and 25 we should go for it on 4th rather than attempt a field goal.

  • It wouldn't surprise me if LSU puts in some Georgia southern run options. We couldn't stop that..but..with Saban having a month to prepare..I say we open up a can of whoop ass this time. We will come out like last year against Michigan state and kick some ass...I say we win by 21...Roll Tide.

  • They scored 9 pts, 6 in regulation.

I'll take a carbon copy of whatever we did in that game on D.

Not knocking you because that is a thought, but it is kind of hard to go for it on 4th down and 18 because of all the penalties we kept getting. I wouldn't mind punting on some of those. Who knows, they could muff a point or we could get an interception inside the 50 like we did against Auburn.

  • Just remember, in the Georgia Southern game we were without Josh Chapman(injury), Nick Gentry(suspension), Jesse Williams(food poison). JC was the only one we were prepared to be without. The others were late in the week. Missing our 3 best DL was the major reason. Then we didnt tackle well on top of that. Will be a non-issue against LSU, IMO.

^This. Also with JJ the man now that's all we have to prepare for. Last time around we didn't know how much each QB would play. Did yall see some of the passes JJ threw against UGA? There was one in particular on a slant to RR where he hit him in the back of the ankle with a throw.

This. We didn't do anything special on offense, and our O looked better than theirs.

  • The only thing that they ran with any success was the option. The key to me in this game is WINNING the TO battle. Not breaking even or losing but winning it. Even if by only one. Do that and break even on special teams and we win the game.

  • Just a thought...

A lot of times the defender's (DE or SAM lber) role is to spill not contain. You want to stretch the play laterally. Most defenses outside of youth football play spill and kill, not contain. The theory is the sideline never misses a tackle and is a nice 12th defender.

  • I dont remember any speed sweeps hurting us at all in that game. I remember the speed option hurting but thats it. One screwup in coverage before the half hurt too but I dont remember getting gashed at all the entire game until JJ started running that option.

  • Good point. The LSU wide receivers impressed in how well they blocked.

This, ^^^^ the speed option and lead option is all I seen them hurt us with in the game. The CBs as CNS eluded to are going to have to do a better job playing the cut blocks of the receivers off with their hands and not get tied up. The pitch man is their responsibility along with the strong safety. RTR

I think having the safeties and corners covering the pitchman is an inherently flawed way to defend the option. Most teams will take their RBs against a DB every time.

We need to show a 4 man front with the DE taking the QB and the OLB taking the pitch man with outside containment help from the CB.

  • If you really think about it, we had six turnovers in the game. Two iNTs and four missed field goals, which are all really just a turnover on downs, times four! we lost by 3! If we play close to even in TO's we wine by double d's.
