Chris Black. Forgive me for asking, but how good

The more important question is has he mastered the high point snatch?

He has terrific ball skills and has a chance to be an outstanding college receiver -- more of a slot type. Very good routes and outstanding hands.

IMO, we are all watching greatness in Amari Cooper. Not sure we should compare anyone to him coming in at this stage. He has the gear to get deep and get separation to go with great hands, size -- the total package.

Cooper reminded me a lot of AJ Green as a freshman... Hopefully he continues progressing like Green did and becomes a top draft pick as well.

  • Everyone forgets that Black was projected over Cooper, he was a higher ranked prospect as well. Cooper is awesome, no doubt, but wait until you see Black next year too. Assuming 100% recovery from his injury, he's sick.

  • i have no idea but if he could elevate his game to the point where he is clearly ahead of the others (not cooper) then we would have a lethal 1-2 punch for the next couple years

while i think cooper is much better htan black will be, black was ranked higher for most of the recruiting process, if not all of it (without checking)

Ranked higher yes. Projected to play before Coop at Bama no.

...which was a miss by recruiting analysts. We heard strong rumors of our staff believing Amari was the best WR they'd seen in camp since Julio.

  • The staff has obviously been high on Cooper throughout his recruitment to the minute he stepped on campus. I can't remember Coach Saban commenting on a freshman so much in fall camp as he did with Cooper. Nothing against Black, but I don't think he has been ahead of Cooper once both were on campus. With that said, he can still be a great WR as Cooper will be an All-American.

What's impressive is he also provided the original definition against this guy. bow

  • First post on the board, so be gentle. Went back and checked the 2012 composite ratings and found that Chris Black was slightly more highly rated than Cooper coming out of HS (Black was #4 and Cooper was #6). I plan on going back and watching the A-Day game from last year because I seem to recall Black making some plays. It seems he was doing very well in practice until he got hurt. Anyway, AJ is going to have a lot of targets this year with everyone healthy and the new additions. Plus, I would think that Coach Nuss will be even more comfortable with an entire year of play calling under his belt.

My only concern (and its a small one) with the offense is that they will be developing so many new starters on the OL with a new position coach. I would feel better if Coach Stoutland was still there. Since CNS likely has his pick among the top candidates, I would assume that the new OL coach will fit in just fine. Plus, he has some talent to work with. Can you say, reloading?

Agreed-bad time for Stoutland to leave

yep...the real question is how to we get black involved with jones entrenched as the starter at slot? he may end up as an outside guy with coop, norwood, bell and white

If he turns out to be as good as everyone predicts, Black could bump jones. Best player plays. Incentive to do all the little things right because somebody is looking to take your job.

I don't think jones is a lock to be a starter. If black comes on strong he could be the starter.

  • Cooper made a comment between the SECCG and the BCSCG that was something to the effect of (paraphrasing), "I know I am getting a lot of hype about how good a year I have had but if you think I am good, wait until you see what Chris Black can do." This comment came out about the time when Black was back at full speed in practices and CNS and already spoken to Blacks parents about possibly burning his redshirt if need be for either of the Championship games.

  • Cooper is very good and stepped up big time for us. In the A-day game Black was better than any other receiver on the field. Can't wait to see them both on the field.flex

IIRC, that was based on the fact that Coop did not start competing in the underwear Olympics until late in the process. If he had spent more time on the camp circuit he would have been ranked higher than Black. Black wasn't nearly as polished.
