Clock stopped with :13

  • With :13 left, LSU ballcarrier was tackled in-bounds. Nearest official wound the clock then signaled to stop it. The clock remained stopped until LSU snapped the ball. Obviously they had no timeout remaining. If stoppage was for injury, shouldn't there be a 10 second runoff then clock started as soon as ball was ready for play? What was going on here?

  • This may be a dumb question, but could a guy going for the sideline, as soon as he realizes he's not going to make it, chuck the ball lateral-style out of bounds to stop the clock, as long as it's not an illegal forward pass?

I was going crazy when that was happening live.

He fumbled it out of bounds. It happened right in front of me. The statisticians didn't change him with a fumble, though.

Also, Alabama defenders weren't credited with a single hurry ... really.

I suppose they could, but not many ball carriers would have the presence of mind to think of it (and to know when it's too dangerous). RBs could also throw the ball away if they know an outside run is getting blown up but as a general rule holding onto the ball is so ingrained into their heads they just take the TFL.

The only player that can throw the ball away without intentional grounding is the one that takes the snap. The only reason I know that is bc it happened last week to ole miss.

interesting. I did not know that. Another reason the RB could not throw it away any time I assume is because of illegal man downfield if passed it after his blockers moved ahead?

You just gave Onterio McCaleb a new dimension to his running game :)

  • Another question, the play where LSU had it and it was 2nd and 8, they tried an option and Mett pitched it 2 yards behind the LOS, the running back didn't catch it, it bounced out of bounds and they marked it where the ball went out of bounds and not where the pitch happened. Am I crazy or shouldn't it have been 3rd and 10?

Thanks for clearing that up. I was screaming so loud at the stopped clock that my dog left the room (again...).

No hurries, huh? Did they at least get the final score right? That would be 21-7 in favor of the Crimson and White team!

Just like if you want to get away with PI then "trip" at the last minute, fall on the other player and call it incidental contact.

  • The funny thing to me nobody is talking about is if the clocked stop when ball went out of bounds, why did LSU hurry to line and snap ball like clock was still running. I think that's poor qb and coaching by LSU and really worked in our favor as they were in panic mode.

Thanks for the response. On tv you can not see the fumble but if you look
closely you can see that the ball is no longer in his right hand. Odd that the nearest official first wound the clock indicating the tackle was in bounds.
