Congrats to Gottfried...

  • and NC State for advancing to the Sweet Sixteen, but I'm still very happy and excited about Coach Anthony Grant. He has my upmost support and I hope he has yours as well. Given time and patience, he will do great things for The University of Alabama, RTR!

  • He's a tournament coach. Getting to the tournament is his weakness.

Really he ruined it. I guess you hate Dr. Andrews and all the current Alabama medical staff as well. Dr. Andrews examined Steele many times and it was not until very late did he ever find that Steele had a knee defect. The entire Alabama medical staff missed it as well. Those same staff are trusted entirely by CAG. Dr. Andrews is the most respected sports surgeon on the planet. Tell me if you are being told by the best surgeon in the world that nothing is wrong with a player, and then that kid says he wants to play as well what do you do? Really I wonder where people come up with this stuff.

How did he ruin Ronald Steele's career? Steele's knees were never going to hold up in basketball. Sucks for him but Gottfried had nothing to do with the genetics of Ronald Steele.

As for CMG, I am very happy for him. He has rediscovered the passion and has a great staff at a great school with a lot of support. I'm rooting for him the rest of the way.

  • I am happy for Mark Gottfried. He is an alum and did two things during his tenure as our head coach that nobody else did. A #1 ranking and an Elite 8. Also won a regular season SEC title. There were some great moments during his time here. There were also some lows, but that comes with every program.

I don't understand the people that hold a grudge against someone for something that doesn't really directly affect them. As an alum and supporter of the program of course I was upset at the level of our play the last couple of years he was here and it was time for him to go. But it is over. Let it go. He made mistakes. And he paid for it. He lost his job. Pretty sure that wasn't in his 10 year plan. People lose passion for things in their job field all the time, his was just on a larger stage than 95% of other people.

I never once heard him say a bad thing or make a snide remark about Alabama after he was fired, unlike some others(like Mr Bobby Knight) have done.

  • Gottfried did some great things for Alabama basketball, but I kind of lose respect for people that don't work their butts off to do the very best they can all of the time. Especially when you are the "CEO" making millions. I'm happy to see him get his fire back, but he costs my university millions of dollars and didnt make the best decisions for the university and program.

    +1

He used his time off and found his desire, but left his mess behind. Hopefully he learned his lesson.

He didn't cost us anything. He was paid a salary from experience as all people in higher level jobs are and he lost his job because of several years of poor performance. In his last 3 years he cost us a total of 3 million dollars. His salary was at 1 mil. a year. So basically his last 4 yrs. he cost us 4 mil and we had one NCAA tourney victory against Marquette to show for it. Well we have paid 5.4 mil to Grant and no NCAA victories to show for it, so using your logic he has cost your University millions as well. Gottfried coached at the University for over 10 years with his first 5 yrs of salary being under 800k. His last few years his salary was at a Mil. after the Elite Eight. Hardly a high salary considering. Grant is being paid for a job as well, and if we don't improve and regress then we will fire him as well, but he will not cost us money. It is money we are freely giving him to get us to a level.

  • Dont quote my logic when you dont understand it. That will be a good rule of thumb for you going forward.

Gottfried got complacent, lazy, and didnt work to a standard that our University deserves and should require. (and Im not even going to bring his University code of conduct violations).

Wages are based on supply and demand of labor, and demand is based on the NPV of the cash flow streams you can provide. NOT NCAA TOURNEY Victories. Grant is doing, for this program, exactly what is expected of him....to date. Gottfried did not. People who do not work hard and do not do his / her job are not worth any salary. Dont believe me, show up to work next week and stare off into space, play on the internet, and break the code of conduct, and you will find out.

  • I did today and will always pull against Gottfried. He was handed the reigns to his alma mater and got lazy. I don't support laziness.

  • How do you know he was lazy? Was he showing up for work at 11:00 in the afternoon. Was Mal writing him up for skipping work or calling in for sick days? People assume you are lazy if you don't suceed but trust me I have seen thousands of coaches who work their butts off every single second and don't win a damn thing. That's doesn't make you lazy. You know nothing about his work habits and thinking you do is amazing. I really think some of the people on here act as if they actually lived in his office every single day and knew everything that happened in the program. Some of you hold such a grudge that you refuse to see any kind of logic, and when logic is presented to you, you make fanciful statements to try and back up your argument that you couldn't have knowledge of.

IVory, read what DrTide wrote...he was very lazy in his last 3-5 years, AND there was much more than just that behind the scenes that, hopefully, won't really come to light. The University was in a position where they didn't really have a choice, even if XCMG was performing, honestly...

But, I do wish XCMG well, if for nothing else than how he played on the teams he was on under Wimp...

Thanks Crimson, I think there are people on here that feel entitled or owed things. He got fired for his failures over his last 3 years deservedly. Some of that was bad luck, some of it was bad choices on recruits and some of it was poor coaching. Also I love how the rumors keep changing every year on the reason he was fired and like a great fish story they keep getting better and better. First it was an affair, then it was a multiple affairs, and now it was he was sleeping with his players's GF's. Yet not one person who claims they have knowledge of these events has ever come forward with any shred of evidence other than innuendo, and I hate that because if you want to destroy someone's character step up and be a man and put the proof out there, otherwise shut up about it. I don't care what people do in their personal lives but attacking someone in back channels while saying that they refuse to release what happened is a joke.

The general sentiment is that he did not work as hard his last couple of years as he did the first several. That, to me, sounds like he got complaisant and judging by his performance now was burned out his last couple of years.

In my career I've had several jobs/positions and if you went to all my mangers and asked them if I left my position in better shape than I found it in they would say yes. I take pride in that and think that is what disappoints me the most with CMG. He had this program going great and let it crumble in font of him. NCSt fans need to hope that CMG has learned his lesson but you know what they say about old habits....

  • Well despite what people feel we were in a much better place as a program than where he found it. We were pitiful under Hobbs, and didn't have any talent at all. We went from that to a 5 time tourney entry with an Elite Eight run and our first ever # 1 ranking. We did falter our last few years but thinking that those failures were just due to one reason is completely illogical. Coaching isn't like most jobs, you can do your best job and still fail at it at times do to many reasons. Your job relies on 18-21 year old kids who also have a full time job of attending school as well. Imagine if you worked somewhere and they said hey your job is based off of these 12 kids, but guess what you can only work with them for 20 hours a week. It would drive you nuts. The coaching profession is very tough at times and it can also be very cruel to even the best coaches. Ask Coach K who I thought had one of the most beautiful quotes after losing to Lehigh. He said that he loved this game so much and that it can give you such great moments but that it can also tear you down and lead to horrible lows and humble even the best of players and coaches. MG hopefully learned a lot while being away and it seems he has come back and is proving he can lead a team again. Also what is his old habits? Gottfried was a winner as a player, winner as an assistant coach, winner as a HC at Murray, Winner and NCAA tourney Coach at Alabama for 7 seasons, and then the wheels came off the last 3. So which is the anomaly and which is the normality?

  • Okay, I'm not saying it isn't challenging or different than most other jobs. So now that we got that all cleared up I'll plainly spell out what 80% of the people here are trying to tell you. He didn't work as hard his last couple of years. Why do you find that so hard to believe? Everyone I know that's close to the program says that, it was written about extensively before and after he was let go so if it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck then yep you guessed it... It's a damn duck.

    Old habits = getting complaisant.

Ivory, you are right about he improved us from Hobbs, God bless him---Hobbs was a good man, just over his head, much like Shula. And he had us on the up, but simply got "fat" (literally and figuratively) on his moderate success, which got him lazy. He'll do the same at NCSt in a couple years, too. It's human nature: get a new job, try and prove yourself, set the world on fire to prove it, make some hay and success, then you feel "comfortable" (unless you're CNS) and you get lazy...simply put...
