“I don’t think we are executing well because of them going with the no huddle and it’s affecting our rhythm. We need to make some plays on offense to counter what they are doing on defense.”
GAME CAPTAINS: Alabama’s game captains for the Mississippi game were Barrett Jones, AJ McCarron and Nico Johnson. Alabama won the toss and received the opening kickoff.
TIDE 53-3 UNDER SABAN WHEN LEADING AT THE HALF: Alabama leads Mississippi, 27-7, at halftime. The Crimson Tide is 53-3 when leading at halftime under head coach Nick Saban.
MCCARRON PASSES WITHOUT AN INTERCEPTION: AJ McCarron passed Brody Croyle’s Alabama record of 190 consecutive pass attempts without throwing an interception when he connected with Brent Calloway in the latter part of the second quarter. McCarron entered the game with 176 attempts and entered the locker room with the new record of 195 attempts without an interception.
MCCARRON PASSING TOUCHDOWNS: Over the last eight games, junior quarterback AJ McCarron has been finding the endzone at a frequent rate, totaling 18 over that span. In six of the last eight games McCarron has thrown two or more touchdowns, including two more in the first half against Mississippi. The signal caller has thrown two or more in four of the five games this season, equaling his multi-passing touchdown total from last season.
KICKOFF RETURN FOR A TOUCHDOWN: Christion Jones answered a Mississippi touchdown with a 99-yard kickoff return at the 13:25 mark in the second quarter. The kickoff return for a touchdown is the first by a Crimson Tide player since Trent Richardson found the endzone at Duke on Sept. 18, 2010. The 99-yard return for a score is tied for the eighth longest in school history.
LAST TIME ALABAMA TRAILED: Despite only trailing for one play when Mississippi scored 1:20 into the second quarter, it was the first time Alabama had done so in regulation since Tennessee opened the scoring with a field goal with 3:58 left in the first quarter last season (10.22.11). That streak spanned over nine complete games or 40 quarters. After trailing to Mississippi, Alabama scored 21 unanswered points to end the half.
CONSECUTIVE SCORING QUARTERS: After putting up points in both quarters to start the game against Mississippi, Alabama has now scored in 33 consecutive quarters. The last time the Crimson Tide failed to put up a point in a quarter was the opening frame against Mississippi State on Sept. 12, 2011.
FIRST HALF SCORING: Alabama has helped its own cause over the last few seasons by not trailing while entering the locker room at the half. The Tide has either held a lead or been tied entering the intermission in 25 straight games. Over that span UA has outscored the opposition 489-97. The last time the Tide trailed at the half was at South Carolina on Oct. 9, 2010.
SCORING STREAK CONTINUES: With its first field goal of the game at the 7:17 mark of the opening quarter against Mississippi, Alabama raised its current total of games in which it scored to 147. The 147 straight games mark the longest streak in program history.
FIRST HALF DEFENSE: The Crimson Tide has allowed seven points or less in 21 of its last 22 first halves of play against opponents from the Football Bowl Subdivision. Over that span, Alabama surrendered just three points or less on 12 occasions, including nine shutouts.
For the most part.
