The SEC has suspended former Oxford DB and current Ole Miss safety for a week following this hit during the Ole Miss game.
Ole Miss' Trae Elston with a huge hit vs. UTEP 09-09-12

Good move by sec. There have been several in last few years deserving.
Over the top IMO
Looked like good defense to me.
Couldn't tell if he targeted head or even hit the head... He had to knock the crap out of him to break up the pass. That's big boy football, imo...
And, be honest here, if that was Mark Barron laying the wood on someone last year every person on here would be up in arms if he was suspended...
Defenseless player, hit above the numbers...I hate targeting too, but that's pretty flagrant.
Penalty for launching maybe should have been called but SUSPENSION??? Ridiculous IMHO--that seems a little "Goodell"ish to me.
That is not football that is trying to make a highlight film. Leading with the helmet on a receiver. Penalty but not suspension.

To be honest, I do not think that deserved a suspension.

If Trae got suspended for that, the barn lineman should be shot for the way tackle. Its always the second guy rolling on top. Im conviced they like sloppy seconds. or just guys.
This. I could see a penalty, MAYBE... Hitting is part of the game. I hate injuries as much as anyone but at this rate we should just put flags on their waist and be done with it.
Elston was clearly targeting the player. However, what else is he supposed to do? Is he supposed to pull up to not hurt the player while he make the catch and scores the touchdown. Also, the receiver didn't play the ball in anticipation of the big hit in an effort to protect himself. The receiver pulling up therefore reducing his momentum going forward actually makes the hit appear worse. A penalty works, a suspension is going overboard. You suspend players to send a message to others that particular conduct will not be tolerated. However, is it clear from the video what the player can not do in that situation? Tackle softly? I understand trying to protect the player but this is getting ridiculous.
Pass out the damn flag belts if you're going to suspend somebody for a hit like that. Total garbage move by Slive.
led with his shoulder and didn't leave his feet until the hit caused him to.
not sure what the league wants him to do?
No way he should have been suspended. Under new rule, it's a penalty, but suspension, come on man!
Does not compute.
Not even a penalty in my opinion. Head-hunting is, and should be, illegal. This wasnot a head-hunt shot, or even leading with the head. He didn't even launch. A suspension for this is just another knee-jerk reaction that has become typical of the sissification of our society today.
You'll never achieve great things until you believe that's what's supposed to happen
