The Tide wraps up play in the UNI Dome Tournament this morning.
Radio: 99.1 FM
ND State, which is nicknamed the Bison if I remember correctly, got hit in the top first but nothing else. Traina is throwing for Alabama.
Christopher Walsh covers Alabama football for BamaOnline, 247Sports, and is the author of 18 books.
McCleney leadoff double -- that gives her 11 hits in the tournament -- goes to third on a passed ball, Braud walks, steals second, Hunt flies out to center, McCleney scores.
Several good young Freshmen getting to play in this 5 game tourney. Good to see and lots of talent from these girls.
FINISH this one off with a nice 5-0 start to the season. ROLL Lady TIDE ROLL...
WOW...we have a Super Star in the making ladies and gentlemen.
Ms. McCleney just homered to give us a 2-0 lead. Very talented young lady.
If they give out a tournament MVP, she's coming back to Tuscaloosa with it.
Hunt just homered BAMA 4-0 bottom of 3rd still no outs...
Hunt shot to the 10 yard line, oops ... 255 feet by our count.
4 - 0 after 3.
Keima Davis goes deep 3 run shot
Shots by D. Hays and K. Davis in 5th.
BAMA Wins! 10 - 0.
How bout the bat this tourney by Keima at the bottom of the order? I think that's 3HR's for her in the 5 games? I keep thinking I want to see more of Hawkins in the outfield but if Davis is going to be swinging like this, she must get her swings. Great offensive performance by so many of the girls - leading the way the Freshmen McCleney. Glad to see Daena have a nice day at the plate today. And Kallie Case, another Freshman was 3 for 3 today. We have several young girls already playing well in their rolls. Of course as competition improves, well see how things go.
Nice start to the year.
It's been fun watching. BAMA Ladies in Cedar Falls, IA!
Lots of talent and speed!
It's gonna be fun this year!
Quick question. You were at the games, right? How does Haylie look playing center? I know it seems her speed is great. Does she seem comfortable there? Smooth? What's it look like in person. And any other young girls you saw.
THANKS so much. Can't wait to see more of the team as the year goes on.
Fabulous Start on the road to the National Championship.
If you guys can possibly make it to the game at 3pm on Tuesday I highly advise you to come. We play South Alabama who was in our regional final last year. They are a good team so it should be a good game. Of course I thought NDST would have given us a better game too.
**Golson I too would like your opinion on McCleney in the field this weekend. I've seen her in the fall and in scrimmages this semester, but she didn't have many opportunities to make plays.
BB2One & netny10,
Sorry I couldn't answer your posts earlier. We followed the team to the other end zone where they were signing autographs after the game. Don't get the wrong idea; it wasn't for me, allthough I enjoyed meeting and talking with the players. My wife is in a leg cast since surgery on Monday after breaking her ankle in the driveway last Thursday as a result of a big snow. We borrowed a wheel chair to go to the tournament, which we had planned to attend for months. She was able to make it through the weekend with great difficulty, but she wanted to get the girls to sign her "red" cast.
Only problem was that field level was 23 rows below where she could go in the chair. It was 46 steps down to the field. I went down and using my new team family contacts, etc., and asking players directly, got several key players to climb the steps to sign her cast. My wife was very pleased to have signatures for Denae Hays, Kayla Braud, Keima Davis, Courtney Conley, Lauren Sewell, Kallie Case, and Andrea Hawkins. I didn't ask Jackie because she was the last player to leave the field after signing autographs, and I just couldn't ask her. I hope you can understand my long explanation.
I was extremely proud of these girls for taking their time and energy to climb those steps to make a BAMA fan happy. As netny10 told me earlier, they were humble and very nice; great ambassadors for our university, and wow, can they play ball. Now to your questions.
There were numerous star players: Jackie of course, and Kiema Davis was outstanding and wow what power she demonstrated even under pressure like in the 7th inning last night. She is a great right fielder, which makes it hard for Andrea Davis to get playing time. You can see Andrea's talent, which is imense, but Kiema is smoother in the outfield at this time. They are both extremely fast, of course and both are great with the bat. They both demonstrate that speed kills.
Denae Hays at short and Kaila Hunt at second seemed to be the best infield combination this weekend and I thought they both played well; both showed power too. Kayla Braud owns left field of course and is still great. Courtney Conley still owns 3rd and showed good power this weekend. Kallie Case looked great today too. I did not mention several other good players. Truthfully, we have lots of very good, interchangeable players to be able to rest players and in case of injuries.
Now for the best news, Haylie McCleney simply looks like a super star in the field and at the plate. She looks like a pro in CF and made several outstanding plays. She is very smooth in the outfield and also at the plate. She exudes confidence and shows outstanding speed. It will be hard for her to play on a regular basis as well as she played this weekend, but guys, she is gonna be a super star! Look at her stats! I loved Jen Fen, but Haylie is better, and I know, she is only a freshman.
I hope Leslie Jury and Lauren Sewell can continue to progress and gain confidence, so that Jackie doesn't have to carry the whole load as pitcher. Jackie has obviously lost alot of weight and she looks great, but she still is outstanding in the circle.
Sorry for the very long post, but guys, I am excited about our softball team. They are gonna be great this year and very fun to watch. Let me know you read this post and what you think, please.

Perfect post. Not too long. Thanks for all the info. I'm very glad for Keima as she's been with the team for 3 years and only played so far sparingly, mainly a lot of pinch running. This was more because of the girls in front of her than really her talents. I said in a post that I would love to see some of the young girls in right but if her bat is going to be this BIG, lol how could we not keep her in the lineup. We seem to have a great mix with this team from Jakie, Keima, Kayla, Courtney, Kaila being Jr.s and Sr.s to the young upcoming stars. We knew the Freshman had talent, I think my only question was how quick they could feel comfortable at the next level.
Can't wait to see them live, TV, and more through the year. It's going to be a few weeks before I can make a trip to watch them play - my son is also wanting to go this year with me (I guess I turned him into a fan last year through the tournaments). He's more football since he plays for his HS but he's starting to like it as well. I, have been hooked for years now. To your other point - these girls are amazing not only on the field but the stuff they do off the field like today for your wife is unreal from College stars like this. And they are stars now. We keep hearing things like this over and over and over which only makes all of us even prouder to support them as much as we can.
Thanks for all your info and let your wife know were all wishing her a speedy recovery. ROLL TIDE...
