6 p.m. start - nice day at the Joe, although it'll be a little cool tonight after the sun sets.
Tuesday W-L ERA G/GS IP H R ER BB SO
UA-Taylor Guilbeau (Soph., LHP) 1-0 2.30 5/3 15.2 13 5 4 13 15
MEM-Alex Gunn (Jr., LHP) 0-1 0.69 4/4 13.0 11 4 1 0 9
A lot of changes in the lineup today as no one is batting .300 for the season any more.
Christopher Walsh covers Alabama football for BamaOnline, 247Sports, and is the author of 18 books.
We need a win badly to maybe get some momentum going.
took my last recruiting trip to memphis knowing I was going to Bama. Only reason i did was because Peyton Manning was playing at there place and thought would be cool to see in person. What do you know Memphis upset Tenn and the whole student section rushed the field I had no choice but to do the same. Was a HS senior running around on this field not caring about either school but was pretty cool.
The rushed the field for a baseball game? Just kidding.
Memphis brought some fans tonight. Looks like about a 50/50 split here as the teams get ready to take the field.
Tide gives up one hit, a single to Little, but the inning ends on another double play turned by the middle infielders. No score, heading bottom first.
Tide goes three up, three down in the first.
Memphis gets a leadoff single erased by a 5-4-3 double play, and after drawing a two-out walk White was picked off at first.
No score, heading bottom second.
Tide goes down 1-2-3 again, with the Memphis second baseman making a great play to get Overstreet's ball up the middle and throw him out at first.
No score through two innings.
Alabama turns its third double play of the game, this time 4-6-3.
Heading bottom third, no score.
Tide goes down in order again. Hasn't even had a base-runner yet. No score through three.
Really need to take these 2 games. Tennessee won't be an easy matchup this weekend.
Memphis gets a leadoff single from Willis, and this time it costs Alabama. Two-run home run to left by Little.
Memphis keeps the rally going with a walk, single and infield hit to plate another run.
3-0, heading bottom fourth.
Good news: Tide finally gets a hit, Moore's single up the middle with two outs in the fourth.
Bad news: Smith the promptly struck out to end the inning.
Memphis up 3-0
Guilbeau hits the first batter he sees in the fifth, the No. 9 hitter Gross and Gaspard pulls him.
Haack in out of the bullpen.
Haack retires Memphis without any damage. Still 3-0, heading bottom fifth.
Offense is sure struggling. Someone has to step up and set the tone
Booth gets a leadoff single, but Memphis makes a couple of nice defensive plays to keep the runner from advancing.
3-0 through five innings.
Memphis goes down order thanks to Smith making a nice defensive stab at first for the 3-1 third out.
3-0, heading bottom sixth.
One big inning is all we need to get this win as it doesn't seem like Memphis is tearing the cover off either.
Blanchard leadoff single up the middle, he goes to second on Salem's ground out to first, but Roberts walked.
So two on with one out.
Moore hits into a 6-4-3 double play. Ouch.
That was just the second time Alabama had a runner in scoring position.
3-0 after six innings.
Boz, I miss the old Bama baseball back in your era when Bama ripped the cover off the ball. Putting up 15+ hits, 10-12 runs and 2 or 3 homers a game was the norm. Now, it seems the norm is 4 or 5 hits, 2 or 3 runs (at most) a game and about 1 homerun every 4 or 5 games. There is something to be said for good pitching and defense but I like my college baseball with lots of scoring. Do you think it has more to do with the bats nowadays or is Bama just seriously lacking in hitters?
Bama has a .280 slugging %. Not batting average. Slugging %. That is unheard of for a college team. Not only are we not hitting for average, but we aren't hitting extra base hits. Hard to drive in runs that way and create big innings.
Tide awfully sloppy here in the seventh.
Wilson gets a leadoff walk, advances to second on a ground out, steals third.
Gross, the No. 9 hitter, reaches on an error (run scores), steals second and goes to third on another error.
Willis was the hit by a pitch.
So that's one run in, two runners on base and one out, Memphis up 4-0.
Ok - it just got weirder - the runner goes, the Tide has him dead to right, but the throw hits the ump right in the rear (right cheek), Overstreet picks up the ball and throws home as the runner on third broke. He looked safe to me but the ump called him out.
Memphis coach argued to no avail.
