Big game tonight as Troy is ranked No. 25.
Start time: 6 p.m.
Alabama will start sophomore lefty Taylor Guilbeau (3-1, 2.97), and the Trojans will start RHP Jeremy McGowan (0-0, 3.60).
Christopher Walsh covers Alabama football for BamaOnline, 247Sports, and is the author of 18 books.
Any idea why we made up the Miss Valley St game? All it did was drop our RPI by 6 spots. The only reason I could guess is that we thought we could end up in danger of not having the required winning record for the post-season and this would be a for sure win.
The opening was from the rainout against Texas A&M.
I think Mitch was looking at the schedule, saw the Mississippi State and Vanderbilt series and thought they had better get another win just so the players just don't get too bogged down mentally right before the postseason. Yes, they were at the bottom of the RPI rankings, but the well-being of the team was obviously a factor.
We're about to start here at the Joe and going through all the pregame ceremonial rituals. Nice night at the Joe, a little on the warm side, but with a breeze as the sun is setting ...
BTW, Troy is third NCAA scoring this season and top six guys in the order are batting better than .300.

Not a great start for Alabama as Vaughn got a leadoff walk and went to second on a passed ball, third on a wild pitch and with two outs scores on a Santos double to center. 1-0 Troy.
TIde has a one-out rally going in the first, with Salem singling, Overstreet drawing a walk and Moore singling to center to load the bases.
Smith draws a full-count walk to bring in a run. 1-1
Troy doesn't waste any time, goes to the bullpen to bring in right-hander Thomas Austin.
McGowan threw 20 pitches, eight strikes.
Booth grounds into a 4-6-3 double play.
Apparently Alabama still thinks its playing Mississippi State.
1-1 after one inning.
Troy went down in order in the second.
... BTW, the Trojans have faced one ranked opponent this season, No. 24 Southern Miss, for a three-game series in early February. They lost the opener 12-4, but won the other two games 6-3 and 8-3. Troy was also home for those games.
Alabama is 2-0 against Southern Miss this season, winning 10-8 over the No. 21-ranked team on Feb. 19, and 7-4 while on the road April 24.
Something's wrong with Troy's catcher and he's pulled in the middle of the second inning. Jake Harrell replaces him.
Guilbeau gave up a leadoff single to Harrell in the third, but the runner was erased by a 6-4-3 double play.
1-1 heading bottom third.
First pitch Roberts sees in the third he knocks over the left-field wall. 2-1 Tide.
Make that 3-1. Salem singled, stole second and scored on Overstreet's double to left-center.
Troy has a conference at the mound and we're back to action ..
Keep it up
Controversy here as Smith gets hit by a pitch but the ump doesn't award him first. Full count with one out. He takes ball four.
First and third with one out. Booth hits into another double play, 6-4-3.
3-1 after three innings.
Smith didn't get the call because the ump said he didn't make any effort to get out of the way (the ball was right at him).
Top fourth, Collins leads off with an infield single that goes off Guilbeau's foot. he then hits Santos with a pitch and the fans "voice their disapproval" when he's awarded first.
No outs yet.
With two on and two outs Pitts singles to left, and Blanchard comes out throwing to nail Collins trying to score at home.
3-1, heading bottom fourth.
With two outs in the fourth, Blanchard is hit by a pitch. On a hit-and-run, Roberts singles to center, Blanchard to third and comes around to force the play at the plate. With the backup catcher bobbling the ball, he scores. 4-1
I'm a little surprised that Guilbeau comes back for the fifth (Gaspard said the plan was to have him pitch 3-4 innings), and with one out he gives up back-to-back singles. Pierce grounds into a 4-6-3 double play.
He's thrown 70 pitches, 46 strikes.
4-1 heading bottom fifth.
Troy goes to the pen again, brings in Matthew Howard -- tall right-hander who had been the DH.
Leadoff single by Moore.

Tide gets a little lucky in the fifth. With two outs Moore steals second and was out except the guy tagging him doesn't hold on to the ball. White walks and Miller singles to right to score Moore.
Jay Shaw comes into the game in the top sixth.
Shaw gives up a two-out single but nothing more.
Overstreet gets a two-out single in the sixth, but doesn't advance.
Troy goes down 1-2-3 in the seventh.
Stretch time, 5-1
